Why Are Highly Educated Americans Getting More Liberal?
NPR ^ | 04/30/2016 | Danielle Kurtzleben

It's a well-worn (if not-entirely-agreed-upon) idea that college makes people more liberal. But a new report adds a twist to this: the most educated Americans have grown increasingly liberal over the last couple of decades.

A report from the Pew Research Center finds a wide partisan gap between highly educated and non-highly-educated Americans. Not only that, but the share of college grads and post-graduates who are "consistently liberal" (based on their answers to a series of policy questions) has grown sharply in the last 20 years.

In 1994, 7 percent of post-grads were "consistently liberal," and 1 percent of people with high school educations or less were — not much of a difference. Today, the gap is 25 points wide — 31 percent of people with post-grad educations are consistently liberal, compared to 5 percent of those with high school educations or less.

The same kind of change just hasn't happened on the conservative side.

Split it out by party, and the shift is even starker. Among the post-grad set, more than half of Democrats and Democratic-leaners today are "consistently liberal," up from fewer than one-in-five in 1994. Likewise, among college grads, it jumped from 12 to 47.

Promote the bursting if the education bubble by paying valedictorians to NOT go to college.

My guess would be they live in a echo chamber focused on theories without experiencing reality.

As the saying goes, “In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they are not.”

Another way to express it is the Michael Jackson syndrome. No one challenges the crazy and day by day the crazy moves further. In academia, this results in the belief that Marxism is a good idea even though every time it put into practice disaster follows. Take Venezuela for instance.

Exactly. Post grad means likely government jobs for life. It would be interesting to see the proportion of liberal arts post graduates as a percentage over time. I’d guess there are more liberals because that’s what the colleges are making more of.

This what happens when you allow communists to teach school.

This is an entire bunch of BS. The average IQ of the demrat voter is at least 10 points below that of republican conservatives. The demrats are the party of welfare. Are we supposed to believe that welfare slugs are somehow intelligent liberals. I would guess that the average freeper has a higher education certificate. Now, let me clarify: higher education doesn’t just come from a college campus. Higher education is also military training, trade expertise training, and accredited on line certification. I have considerable contact with individuals trained in the military and I hold a very high opinion of their training.

Conservative is too broad a term. Do they mean social conservative? Or fiscal conservative? If fiscal conservative do they mean small efficient limited government? Or capitalism vs socialism?

But I think one thing that has really hurt us is lowering the tariffs and the resulting job offshoring. That has created labor dislocations and job pressures that have hurt the image of capitalism.

You throw that on top of technological changesthat would have created plenty of labor dislocations on their own, and people have had enough. They want some stability. And thus they have become more open to other economic models, even though those other models have proven inferior in the past.

I think the technological changes and resulting labor dislocations require better safety nets, and we have moved in that direction. The lowering of tariffs was simply misguided foolishness which did much harm to our country and people.

Charles Murray’s book: Coming Apart, The State of White America, 1960-2010 is a good read.

He focused on whites, as not to be bogged down with other socioeconomic factors. A couple interesting trends I remember that go along with your post.

1) He claims median household income was flat between 1970 and 2010 for non college educated households. That would be a household where neither the husband/wife has a college degree. In contrast, where at least one spouse had a college degree a large increase in median family income was reported. Now considering there is a greater percentage of two-income families in 2010 vs. 1970, I argue (though Charles Murray says the opposite) that the typical guy who doesn’t have a college degree has been losing ground. All the economic gains in the last 40+ years go to the college educated crowd.

2) Analyzing data by zip codes, Charles Murry discovered America has become radically more segregated by income. A man today is much more likely to be married to a woman who is more similar than not in terms of education/income. This is in contrast to the past.

So if you go to college, you are more likely to have a college educated spouse in the past. And considering the political correctness you are exposed to, it seems to change attitudes of students. The next generation is brought where BOTH mother and father share PC or liberal values more often than before.

You (the college educated group) are also more successful than the Bubbas of this world. Imho, that could very well reinforce the notion that liberal values are superior.

Simple. Lots of “education” means lots of debt which they are hoping someone else will pay for under a socialist president.

A college education isn't what it used to be. People come out of colleges these days dumber than a doornail. Colleges are nothing more than diploma mills - anybody willing to pony up $200k (or borrow it) and show up at class for four years will get their degree.

Whether they come out of college able to write anything coherent longer than a 140 character Tweet is questionable.

People don't read anymore. When I was in 9th grade, I was reading at college level. Now you have college students reading at a 9th grade level and getting passing grades from their professors. Many college graduates will proudly tell you they haven't picked up a book since leaving school.

Today’s “education” completely removes our youth from any practical knowledge necessary to live in the real world. They should all pray that their “virtual reality” continues. If not, their world will end and they will have no idea how to survive in the actual environment.

Because they’ve been highly indoctrinated in liberal universities.
They’ve NOT been “educated” at all.
