Johns Hopkins Psychiatrist: Transgender is ‘Mental Disorder;' Sex Change ‘Biologically Impossible’
CNS News ^ | 6/2/15 | Michael W. Chapman

Posted on 05/02/2016 10:27:03 PM PDT by Mr. Mojo

(CNSNews.com) -- Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, said that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” that merits treatment, that sex change is “biologically impossible,” and that people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.

Dr. McHugh, the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, made his remarks in a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, where he explained that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a “disorder of ‘assumption’” – the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically.

He also reported on a new study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people. Dr. McHugh further noted studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic of children who had expressed transgender feelings but for whom, over time, 70%-80% “spontaneously lost those feelings.”

While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as normal, said Dr. McHugh, these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

“This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken – it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”

The transgendered person’s disorder, said Dr. McHugh, is in the person’s “assumption” that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a “dangerously thin” person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are “overweight,” said McHugh.

This assumption, that one’s gender is only in the mind regardless of anatomical reality, has led some transgendered people to push for social acceptance and affirmation of their own subjective “personal truth,” said Dr. McHugh. As a result, some states – California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts – have passed laws barring psychiatrists, “even with parental permission, from striving to restore natural gender feelings to a transgender minor,” he said.

The pro-transgender advocates do not want to know, said McHugh, that studies show between 70% and 80% of children who express transgender feelings “spontaneously lose those feelings” over time. Also, for those who had sexual reassignment surgery, most said they were “satisfied” with the operation “but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery.”

And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a ‘satisfied’ but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs,” said Dr. McHugh.

The former Johns Hopkins chief of psychiatry also warned against enabling or encouraging certain subgroups of the transgendered, such as young people “susceptible to suggestion from ‘everything is normal’ sex education,” and the schools’ “diversity counselors” who, like “cult leaders,” may “encourage these young people to distance themselves from their families and offer advice on rebutting arguments against having transgender surgery.”

Dr. McHugh also reported that there are “misguided doctors” who, working with very young children who seem to imitate the opposite sex, will administer “puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous – even though the drugs stunt the children’s growth and risk causing sterility.”

Such action comes “close to child abuse,” said Dr. McHugh, given that close to 80% of those kids will “abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated ….”

“’Sex change’ is biologically impossible,” said McHugh. “People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder.”

Heretic.

>>Human biology has always resulted in people who are physically and mentally intersexed,

Human biology also results in cancer - Per Romans chapter 1, how does that usually work out for the host?

None of your posts mention XX or XY.

It is unfortunate that you seem so intent on putting words in the man’s mouth to change what he is saying into your own personal cause. He is specifically talking about situations where the the confusion is mental, not biological. A 60 year old man who has fathered children and suddenly decides he wants to be a woman is ill. His biology is undoubtedly male.

Identifying as a woman for him isn’t much different than identifying as Napolean.

John Hopkins was the first hospital to do sex reassignment surgeries. After the studies and tracking, they changed their Ming and no longer do them.

What?

Does this mean if I have feathers inserted under my skin that I won't be a bird?

Gender confusion is marked by sexual behavior with members of the same sex.

Sex abuse victims have a high rate of homosexual behavior.

“Human biology also results in cancer - Per Romans chapter 1, how does that usually work out for the host?”

Intersexed conditions typically have undesirable consequences and occasional fatal consequences. Nonetheless there are still millions of intersexed people who experience relatively normal lives with no particularly different mental illness than cisgendered people.

None of your posts mention XX or XY.

There are too many karyotype and related genetic triggers to list, and many more enabling and disabling genes remain unexplored and undiscovered at the present time. In one example a woman of late middle age visited a physician about an unrelated ailment that required a blood test. A clueless nurse reported the blood test results to the patient adding that the results showed that this woman was actually a man and not a woman. The patient was shocked and in disbelief. It turns out the blood test revealed the patient had the XY karyotype of a male. So, how did this patient with a male XY karyotype come to believe she or he was a woman? The doctor explained to her that she was indeed a woman after all, despite the karyotype and shee could relax. He explained there was another gene that had to implement the XY gene to turn on the process of masculinizing the zygote. In her case this gene failed to turn on the process, so the fertilized egg developed into a typical female physiology in most but not every respect. Moral of the story: there are more than a few people walking around who think they must be a man or a woman who are actually persons carrying sex chromosomes of the opposite sex, some of whom may very well be posting comments here in FreeRepublic saying all transgendered people must be mentally ill. How ironic is that?

“Gender confusion is marked by sexual behavior with members of the same sex.”

Totally wrong. Cross gender identity is quite often independent of sexual preferences.

“Sex abuse victims have a high rate of homosexual behavior.”

Yes, that is true.

The inmates are running the asylum. While the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V) clearly classifies transgenderism as both Gender Identity Disorder (GID) and Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) for those who seek surgical alteration as mental disorders, the cultural Deconstructionists and Relativists in our midst are are forcing the 99.8% of us who are not so afflicted to accept and accommodate this mental illness as the “new normal.”

This is exactly how Cultural Marxism works, except they’re not satisfied with the mere accommodation of mentally ill adults. Now, they’re forcing our vulnerable children to make gender declarations in our schools, while robbing them of their innocence and poisoning their minds with the new social construct that in the interest of fairness and equality, they must accept, tolerate and even celebrate this particular form of madness and perversion.

This is how the cultural mainstream fabric of a society is teased apart (nudged) and distorted one thread at a time, until the (once) whole becomes indistinguishable from its (now redefined) constituent parts -— and they know exactly what they’re doing.

XY gonadal dysgenesis is specifically what the DR. is not talking about. A rare occurrence which is a medical condition as opposed to a psychological condition. Why conflate the two?

“It is unfortunate that you seem so intent on putting words in the man’s mouth to change what he is saying into your own personal cause.”

You appear to have me confused with all of the people on FreeRepublic who are figuratively speaking standing in line to hurl rocks while saying the good doctor agrees with them that ALL transgendered people absolutely must be mentally ill without significant or any exception. I have no personal cause in this subject other than observing what should have been a rather obvious and commonsense truth. It does not serve the Conservative movement well to act in dishonesty and inhumanity to support destructive misinformation and outright lies. If and when the conservative movement fails to act with honesty and integrity, it is up to the members of the community to act to rectify the problem.

“He is specifically talking about situations where the the confusion is mental, not biological.”

The scientific community has only just recently recorded the human genome for the first time, so we are only in the very early stage of discovering what genes are involved in making a determination of physiological and mental characteristics and how they interplay to determine gender behavior and sexual behavior. The SRY gene and its role in determining physiological sex characteristics was unknown a short time ago. The SRY gene and its role in determining mental behavior with respect to gender and sex are virtually unexplored at the moment. Consequently, the good doctor and no one else is in a position to be making unequivocal conclusions and statements about biological science that has not yet even been researched yet. Now, if the doctor had the posters had confined their remarks and conclusions to the results of the sex reassignment surgeries they were responsible for studying, it would be reasonable to find that cohort of research subjects did not on balance benefit from their medical surgeries and accompanying treatments and therapies. Extrapolating those results out to ALL transgendered persons is hardly scientific in any respect, and the commenters advocating the punishment of all transgendered people as being mentally ill is unscientific and contrary to human biology. The commenters on FreeRepublic should not give in to their baser instincts and retain enough skepticism to closely question all proponents of all encompassing policies, pro and con, LGBT or anti-LGBT.

“A 60 year old man who has fathered children and suddenly decides he wants to be a woman is ill. His biology is undoubtedly male.”

You say his biology is male. You don’t and cannot really know that. Even if it happens to be true you do not and cannot know that. Do you have a record of his karyotype and a map of all of the genes controlling the expression of the karyotype? No, you don’t, and no you can’t. Not even the world’s leading laboratories know all of the places to look in the human genome for the genes that control the expression of all such behavior. Is this person mentally ill? It depends upon which of the many definitions you choose to use. Do you choose to use the DSM, if so then which DSM do you prefer? Then explain what the social science used in the DSM of your choice has to do with the actual physical science of human biology.

“Identifying as a woman for him isn’t much different than identifying as Napolean.”

You think so, eh? Then let’s see you produce incontrovertible evidence you are the actual gender and sex you thin you are and claim to be. How can anyone know for sure what you actually are without a comprehensive blood and cell sampling of your sex chromosome karyotypes and your entire genome?

Poor analogy. People who used witchcraft accusations as explanations for that which they didn’t understand, or as a means for settling scores, fall into a category which is quite different than one who cannot accept his/her biological reality of sex.

Sexual dimorphism, XX and XY, was selected by natural selection because sex, the genetic exchange between Male and Female - increases the fitness of species.

The perversion of nature selected for worship by folks who abominate nature - Not. So. Much.

Got Due Penalty?

Thus the plethora of STD’s whose association with certain, abominating, (but “inter-sexually” rationalized) behaviors is well documented by the CDC.

>>So, how did this patient with a male XY karyotype come to believe she or he was a woman?

Androgen Insensitivity syndrome would be my first guess. Back circa 1984, in a course I took on Animal Behavior, a film called "The fight to be male" was shown.  That film, among other things, documented a tribe in Central America where a related condition caused individuals to present female external morphology until puberty - when androgen production kicked in and male morphology was presented.

But that's not an excuse for the demoralization and perversion that's being inflicted upon Western civilization ala the vociferously monotonous rationalizations of the associated "Prideful" self-worshiping culture, is it...

...as Romans chapter 1 CLEARLY illustrates.

Thinking/pretending yourselves [pridefully] wise you've become _________?

“Poor analogy. People who used witchcraft accusations as explanations for that which they didn’t understand, or as a means for settling scores, fall into a category which is quite different than one who cannot accept his/her biological reality of sex.”

The superstitious witchcraft accusation and superstitious application of a mental illness accusation against all people who fall into a category of an artificial social category are both superstitions. You have no way of knowing with any certainty what your own or “his/her biological reality of sex” is in actuality without a comprehensive biological testing beyond the scope of nearly al or all medical facilities. If you try to deny that simple truth, try reporting your karyotype and SRY determination before moving on to further gene expressions.
