What Went Wrong for Ted Cruz
Weekly Standard ^ | May 04, 2016 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 05/04/2016 4:56:00 AM PDT by Magnatron

What happened to Ted Cruz? A month ago, he won the Wisconsin primary in a landslide and was poised to combat Donald Trump with a fresh burst of enthusiasm. Now he's out of the race and Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Things happened in two cycles, some in recent weeks and others that plagued his campaign from the beginning. As Trump said last night, Cruz is tough and smart. But he made big mistakes as a presidential candidate.

I also could be wrong but I believe Donald was giving a hint to the Christian Community. Remember when he spoke of Ted “He raises the Bible up high, puts it down and LIES!”. This to me he was warning the Christians, that there are politicians and well known figures who claim to be Christians are also member of the Establishment. Do not just go blindly and run because they invoke God. I feel Donald is just beginning to expose alot of things.

Oh, I'm not disputing that. I'm talking about the mechanics of the campaign.

Great summary: you captured many of my thoughts over the course of this campaign and expressed them more cogently than I could have myself.

Cruz voting for TPA cloture IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAMPAIGN sealed his fate.

Kasich will drop out before the days end because his role was to ensure that Cruz could not win in a contested convention. He never would have made it to a second round. I suspect that Trump made a deal with the party leaders right after Wisconsin. After all , he is a deal maker. They are a lot more afraid of the conservatives than Donald. They can, always deal with him..

And there is no way I can dispute that.

He walked straight into the buzzsaw of one of Trump's main campaign themes.

That one was a head-scratcher.

Cruz was in it to stay the course. His plan was to try and unseat as many Trump-won state delegations as possible. The RNC convention would have been a showdown of lawyers working with the rules committee. It’ likely the police would have been escorting outraged Trump delegates out of Cleveland.

Cruz quit because of his father. The photographic evidence and newspaper clippings on Rafael were leaked April 22. Cruz has never denied that he’s the man photographed or that he was engaged in those activities. Those connections are intertwined with his dad’s flight to Canada, his parents becoming Canadians and his birth as a NBC of Canada.

No jus solis! No jus sanguis!

Research on the Canadian voting process through 1984 indicates unequivocally that both parents had Canadian citizenship and were eligible to vote while Ted was living in Canada.

Cruz was spot-on right on the Constitution, its primacy, its sanctity. But he supported TONS of initiatives which even the almost-clueless could understand meant the destruction of the Constitution (TPA, TPP, North American Union, amnesty, 21 trillion dollar spending bill---not BUDGET, just extention---bringing in millions of muslim "refugees".

Cruz offered Americans NO SECURITY against the rising tsunami that is Globalism and a borderless world where our jobs and companies are EXPORTED and where millions of third-worlders are IMPORTED.

Cruz either DIDN'T GET IT, or was a STEALTH GLOBALIST candidate.

Under globalist rule, we are going to be able to sit around arguing the Constitution? Does anyone really think there will be ANY prohibition against, for example, abortion, under globalism, or that our globalist masters will maintain our second amendment??

You are correct: “Cruz is an opportunist, globalist, and a career politician. He used checklist conservatism to dupe so many people. His campaign and his tactics prove it.”

Don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk.

The tide turned for Trump when he promised to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.

Ted didn't promise any free stuff.

Cruzers need to try on just one litmus test. We could choose one of many, but how about this one: TPA, which Ted personally shepherded through the Senate.

I have not seen one Cruzer on FR say, I support Cruz because of TPA and Ted's underlying beliefs that made him support and enact it.

HOW can Ted love his country and constitution and support the TPA (and its subsequent TPP, made possible ONLY by the TPA)?

Support of TPA, and sneakily using parliamentarian machinations to get it passed, by definition mean you are not conservative. Is there ONE Cruzer out there who can site chapter and verse of TPA which proves me wrong?

You also have to realize that liberals and media (/never mind) became completely unhinged after Al Gore hanging chad challenge.

If you think those guys were partial to their guy before, last 15 years should prepare us for what’s coming.

’ Is there ONE Cruzer out there who can site chapter and verse of TPA which proves me wrong? ‘

Well Russ Limbaugh might try!

Seriously, I just tuned Russ in for the first time in many, many weeks. Call the Doc....he’s still rabidly Cruz. Can’t let it go. I let Cruz over a year ago. I can let Rush go just as easily. In fact I just did after listening to him from his beginnings at KBFK Sacramento. RIP.

I for one am looking forward to Trump Building a Wall, Using business leaders to negotiate fair trade deals, setting the economy back on track, putting America First Again, and in general just let America be America again.

While I won’t be able to vote the first time for Trump until June 7th, November can’t come fast enough! At least I’ll have all of the next 6 mos. to watch Trump take apart Hillary or whoever else the Democrats finally decide to throw against the wall.

The GOP has changed now for a generation. The GOP is now a populist and nationalist party nominating “outsiders”.

No, I think the GOP is still the same old GOP, they just happened to get their asses handed to them by their base this time around. They might lay low and take some time to lick their wounds and re-group, but the old boys network doesn't give up that easy.

What Went Wrong for Ted Cruz? In a word?

Chicago.

When militant leftists violently shut down a Trump rally and Cruz jumped on the “blame Trump” bandwagon, many Conservatives, myself included, were bitterly disappointed and more than a little angry. I continued to support him, but it was never the same after that point. I think that mistake, more than any others, took the wind out of his sails.

The Carly VP deal was bizarre.
Here in Indiana I’d have to say she was 80% unknown and 19% unpopular, and maybe 1% supporters.
No upside at all.
