The Federal government shouldn't set a minimum wage at all. That's the issue.

Thank you. Though that doesn't appear to be the issue to most people, including our Presidential candidate.

I’ve never seen once seen a Free Republic minimum wage eliminator ever acknowledge that having an open border with a third country makes a difference in the minimum wage debate. It’s like you all are brainwashed robots. It gives thinking Americans pause and makes Free Republic look kooky.

I don't support a federal minimum wage, I think it's a state issue. If that makes me an eliminator, you don't have to answer.

If it doesn't, explain to me how a minimum wage inhibits criminal employers from employing illegal aliens. Seems to me a higher minimum wage enhances the value of illegal labor to those willing to illegally employ them.

Do you think an above market federal minimum price for marijuana would decrease drug transit across the border?

Choose an inflation calculator of your choice and compare. I always add a link to hard facts, unlike many others here, especially when refuting an assertion.

I agree. The truth is businesses that don’t pay enough to live on are being indirectly subsidized by the government, in the form of food stamps, section 8, EITC, etc. Those allow low paid workers to live and go to work at jobs they where they couldn’t otherwise. That’s why the Chamber types are fine with both welfare and open borders/amnesty.

Mr. Trump said he didn’t want to tinker too much with the minimum wage because it would hurt “competitiveness.”

Just like the Income Tax, the Minimum Wage will never go away. There is no putting the Genie back in the Bottle.

Simply by making the suggestion, Trump has taken another issue away from Bernie and Hillary and he didn’t even commit to doing anything.

In a perfect World, the Minimum Wage would be ZERO, but that same perfect world is nothing but a pipe dream.

Six Months to go. Que Sara Sara...

I have always been opposed to raising the minimum wage for the same reason that everyone else here has opposed it.But,if we raised it to 15 dollars the employers would not be hiring illegals for that money and we could tell those business’s to shove it up your nose. Plus the results would also teach people about socialist economics the hard way.

"Would take away the issue."

Not so. Setting any wage above the market demand in itself creates inflation. Pegging it to the very thing it accelerates only perpetuates inflation artificially. Meddling with the market is a disaster.

The argument is not about a minimum wage. Every state has a minimum wage. The argument is about a centrally planned minimum wage pegged at 15 bucks an hour that kills entry level jobs, encourages more automation, discourages Mom and Pop businesses and makes the big government types supporting it feel good.

My brother regional manager of 5 restaurants and I asked him how many of his kitchen staff are on public assistance. He said most of the non students were, about half. So the government is subsidizing corporations, i.e. corporate welfare. He got mad when I told him that.

The trouble with the .gov inflation calculator is that dear .gov keeps changing the rules as to how inflation is calculated.

They have to do this to keep us senior citizens who depend on SSI from keeping up with the cost of living.

Separate issues. Minimum wage has no affect on illegal employees. They work off the books and don’t pay taxes. Underground economy thrives on casual employees.

Thanks for the voice of reality, injected into the pearl clutching naysayers convo.

You are 100% spot on....this takes the issue away from BernHill.

Come on, folks....Trump has proven, time and again, he’s ahead of the lefties and their gotcha tricks. Don’t go down that MSM gotcha road - it’s all BS.

I watched the interview. That’s exactly what Trump did NOT do....commit to ANY set number.

He ALSO said....bringing the jobs back will be the priority.

Oh my God! Illegals know what the minimum wage is. They are not stupid. They know they can get at least that in the USA. This at least slows down the hord from coming.

I’m actually of 2 minds on minunumn wages. First off it’s not a net benifit ecomonicly and cause unemployment with marginal workers. Black workers especially suffer from minunumn wage laws. However they it also encourage tech development as labor becomes too expensive which ultimately benifits everyone in the long run.

As such I usally don’t take a side in such debates.
