Tow truck driver said he refused service to woman because she supports Bernie Sanders

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he could’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders’ supporters.

Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.

“I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” Shupe said Wednesday.

The woman’s mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.

"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."

Below is Kelle McWade’s public post:

Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).

Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."

Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.

"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.

***Being a ‘judgemental ass’ is why people have turned away from the church and God.***

That’s a convenient excuse for people who love their sin more than they love God. Is that a judgmental thing to say?

Whatever else this tow truck driver may be, he most certainly is not a gentleman — or a Christian in my book.

So I can I just say that gay marriage is a political statement and therefore refuse to participate?

...when politics cross over into theological questions I argue it isn’t a religious objection but a political one.

I have long thought that the demonization of “being judgmental” has been a key factor in the moral decay in this country.

Liberals have been key in this. It is bad to be judgmental about “X behavior” because he can’t/control it/was born that way/was made by society to do it/insert your excuse here.

Being judgmental is not bad, and shouldn’t be bad. I simply don’t think this was the time or place to do it in that fashion. Now, as I said in a previous post, if I, as the driver had told her it was $100 for a tow, and she mouthed off about greedy capitalists or something like that, I wouldn’t have thought twice about saying “Okay. You are free to use whichever towing company you wish, I have work to do. Have a good day.” after which I would jump in my truck and go back to work.

But just having a sticker (albeit a stupid one) well...I wouldn’t have done it. Even stupid people deserve service as long as they remain civil to me.

****I have long thought that the demonization of “being judgmental” has been a key factor in the moral decay in this country.****

The sad part about it is that when people say “don’t judge me” they are hardly ever being judged in the first place.

There is only one judge, and that is the Father. And the only judgement he makes is whether or not a person has accepted Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for our sins as Lord and Savior.

The only way for me to judge a person is to usurp that role for myself, and tell someone they will go to hell.

I like to tell people who say that... I am not the judge, only a witness.

Yep - FOX is no longer king of the hill. There are times I don’t mind paying more. Just hired a great, highly recommended vet to do painting for us. Certainly could have saved a lot of money had I chosen one of the many, many illegals who are readily available. But it is the principle of the matter! Don’t have a lot of extra money to spend on anything but what I do choose to spend does not go to organizations that espouse liberal opinions, support liberal causes or individuals that I suspect are not United States citizens. Unfortunately it is sometimes difficult to find those sharing my views.

I see you are dense enough to think that I suggested towing her for free.

Or are you dense enough to think that women actually carry cash around unlike Moi who has $350 on hisself right now?

No I believe that is simply your opinion. We judge people all the time and everyone does it. It is life and required. people are hired ‘judged’ by if they seem to be a good employee.
The left ‘judges’ the south stating they’re a bunch of hillbillies.
They judge people on all sorts of ridiculous ignorance and stereotypes. You can tell by their name calling.
You don’t get people on your side by judging them. You respectfully state how you feel and why.

***You don’t get people on your side by judging them. You respectfully state how you feel and why.***

The Bible is very clear that to judge someone means to tell them that they are going to hell. That is why we are not to judge them, lest we be judged my the same measure.

You don’t get people saved by judging them, and you don’t judge them by reminding them that they are sinning.

***The left ‘judges’ the south stating they’re a bunch of hillbillies***

That is not judging, that is bigotry. That is how the left operates, by confusing language when misusing words. Christians should have fought back on this by quickly and always pointing out this error, thus removing that tactic from the left.

I agree you on this. I do not require proof of citizenship from every person I exchange money with, but if I know that the person is an illegal, and sometimes just if they cannot speak English I will not deal with he/she.

It is hard to even find a church nowadays that spends tithe money in a Godly manner. Many seek to undermine United States laws in giving money to illegal immigrants.

That’s a plausible assumption; however, they all occurred when I was parked in places I don’t normally visit. I take it you’ve never had a liberal scream at you or hurl insults at you - things like “bigot”, “Nazi”, “fascist”, etc. - when you offered a viewpoint that countered their dogmatic perspective on anything? I’ve found that liberals are rarely more than a couple talking points deep and don’t appreciate the value of logic.

Furthermore, and being completely honest, I haven’t really cared whether communists/Marxists/progressives/socialists (but I repeat myself) “like” me for a long time. I used to just walk away, shake my head and avoid the discussion, but no longer do that.

Interesting. I've never had anyone approach or challenge me negatively about the Trump sticker. As I noted, I did catch a woman driving by and shaking her head, clearly in disgust, but who knows, maybe I had cut her off.

I'm in Reno, which is mixed. Walmart is frequent destination, plus libraries, boy's school, etc. In each, I've actually been approached, complimented on the sticker, and asked where I got it.

BTW, the Trump sticker is the only one on the car, a Honda Pilot. Been debating an NRA sticker. Would put and S&W one on but don't see the need to advertise that I am or likely carrying a gun or that there might be one in the car--going to and from range, etc.

I'm spotting a few Trump stickers starting to show up on cars, not many. Definitely more Sanders and have yet to spot a loser Cruz or Clinton sticker. Never once.
