How Ryan decided to ditch Trump
Politico ^ | May 5, 2016 | Jake Sherman

On Wednesday morning, not even 24 hours after Donald Trump effectively clinched the Republican nomination, Paul Ryan convened his top advisers for a call. With Congress out of session, Ryan was bouncing between multiple states, raising the piles of money needed to keep House Republicans in the majority.

But Donald Trump was on his mind. The speaker could not — at least at this point — support him. And he wanted to talk through how to proceed.

Ryan never expected Trump to lock up the nomination so quickly. He didn't think Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would drop out of the race in May. In fact, Ryan's orbit was preparing for a contested convention in Cleveland, where he is slated to serve as chairman, effectively the emcee of the Trump coronation.

The decision was made quickly. The next day, he would go on CNN and make it official, in no uncertain terms.

“I think what a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard-bearer that bears our standards,” he told Jake Tapper in the bombshell interview that was taped shortly before it aired on Thursday afternoon.

“I think conservatives want to know, does he share our values and our principles on limited government, the proper role of the executive, adherence to the Constitution?” Ryan added. “There are lots of questions that conservatives, I think, are gonna want answers to, myself included. I want to be a part of this unifying process. I want to help to unify this party.”

Paul Ryan now says he is a conservative who values limited government and the proper role of the executive.

He sure fooled me.

Ryan is perhaps the BIGGEST LIAR in the Republican leadership. He said that he didn’t want to be Speaker - HE LIED. He said that he didn’t want to be the nominee in a contested - we all know that was A LIE. Now his statements about supporting the nominee were ALL LIES.

Ryan has a Primary opponent. Perhaps a few Trump visits to Ryan’s district will put this embarrassment out of his misery once and for all.

Ryan must be very comfortable with his district. With his past remarks on unity I wonder how it plays in “Sheboygan”.

I agree with what you said, but there needs to be one correction.

Well Ryan helped the big boys bring us conservative standard bearers like mitt Romney and john McCain while absolutely reviling the Tea party

They use this word “ conservative”
11 million of us or more who have voted recently do not think this word means what they think it means

I’m really tired of the MSM and others saying that Rubio, Kasich and Cruz “dropped out of the race”. They only suspended their campaigns, like a time-out in a sport contest. ....John McCain suspended his campaign to go back to DC to give his approval to the huge bank bailout, but then returned to campaign and (unfortunately) became the nominee.

While not likely, Cruz could re-start his campaign and take it to Cleveland where the delegates’ votes actually count.

IMO Ryan’s 6 month reign as Speaker has been weak with his Omnibus Bill as his “high” point.
When Ryan spends this weekend at home and starts getting heat in the district he’ll cut a deal with Trump..fast. I would suspect a place like a natural spot, Williamsburg, VA for hugs.

“I think conservatives want to know, does he share our values and our principles on limited government,..."

Lyin' Ryan is a leftwing Uni-Party Crony Socialist...and not even close to being a Conservative.

What “conservative” outcomes has Ryan led through the house?

Nothing!

Trump will steamroll this hack.

I see that there are still lying #neverTrump people here at FR.

There is a natural home for you over at the HuffPo. The nominee has been chosen by the people.

Live with it or please get lost.
