In an interview on CNN's "New Day," host John Berman asked Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson whether Ryan was fit to retain the speakership if he can't get behind Trump as the GOP standard-bearer.

"No, because this is about the party," Pierson replied. "The last two presidential cycles we were told John McCain was a conservative..."

"I found it very ironic that Ryan spoke of unifying the party while NOT supporting the clear voice of the majority of the people.

I don’t know everything there is to know about American politics, but isn’t it Ryan’s job to back the choice of the people, aka the nominee?"

You know plenty, because that's the root of the problem: We're dealing with an elite that feels it's fine to routinely ignore the will of millions any time they damn well please, which is what made Trump happen in the first place. The treat the people they're supposed to serve with condescension and contempt.

Well, millions of people have had enough.

With the TDSers still on FR, it is about “I” in their negative replies.

“I’m on the fence right now. I don’t fully trust Donald Trump but I don’t want Hillary or comrade stalin I mean Bernie in the white house.”

Get over your I problem or leave.

Let the adults take care of electing Trump as our president!

Which people? Conservatives? I think a lot more than Republicans put him as the nominee. This may be good for the general but it spells the end of a conservative Republican party. There were conservative candidates. Whoever voted didn’t go for them. So, my question is who is “the people?” When I joined Free Republic, a candidate of Donald Trump’s caliber would have been shunned on FR. That was when character matter. Now, only someone who SAYs the right things matters (nevermind there is little depth to the statement). America is imploding. I will not help by voting for either candidate.

That last bit might be true, but the rest of your thinking is muddled. When have "conservatives" in DC lived up to their "conservative" principles in the past 8 years when it really mattered. Bailouts, Obamacare, massive spending, etc., etc. They just went along with it. People are just waking up to the phoniness. Trump's got issues, but he seems to be less of a phony (we'll see). And people are desperate to be done with phonies.

It has been very fascinating to watch this unfold.

I think one of the major problems was that there seemed to be just two choices for Republican voters in the primary. Seeing as people were bound, bent and determined to elect an outsider, it was either Trump (a genuine outsider) or Cruz (a senator, but definitely not an establishment guy, or so most thought).

Sadly, the supposed real conservative, Cruz, was just not a good candidate for various reasons. Trump did one of the most important things that people were looking for - he came across and a fighter, not afraid of political correctness, and he doesn’t back down. Everything the voters despised in the establishment GOP, Trump was not. Add the this the fact that he is wildly successful and people trust him to straighten things out financially, and that pretty much got him to where he is, flaws and all.

I’m curious - if Trump actually is successful with what he is saying he will do, would you not be happy with that?

In my opinion, it’s far more important to listen to the voters than it is to worry about the party

The voters are the party. It's a collection of like minded individuals who join together to support causes and candidates that they expect will advance their beliefs. There is no party without the voters just like there is no chess club in high school if nobody shows up except the president of the chess club. If the president of the chess club insists that everyone henceforth will play checkers he shouldnt be surprised if the rank and file either kick him to the curb OR split off and form a new club that will actually play chess. This is where we are, we're trying to kick the disingenuous snakes to the curb and if that doesn't work I say it's time to shut it down and regroup under another banner.

There are loads more in congress and the senate who are more than eager to follow in his footsteps. Most with (r) after their name.

Is this the way it works now? Shame someone or fear someone into not voting their conscience?

You can apply that standard to a private citizen, not the Speaker of the House and the person in charge of the convention. It shows total disrespect for the opinion of the rank and file voters and the process. If Ryan can't support the presumptive nominee of the party, he should resign his position as Speaker and remove himself as the person in charge of the convention.

Enjoy your tyranny folks. You asked for it.

The real tyranny comes from those who don't accept the will of the voters and the integrity of the process. The GOPe was prepared to take down Trump at the convention and to fund the StopTrump movement to prevent him from getting the 1,237 delegates. Cruz and Kasich conspired to prevent Trump from getting the necessary delegates as well.

The arrogance and hubris of the Bushes, Ryan, Graham, Sasse, et. al. is breathtaking.

So far the sore losers like Cruz and Kasich have failed to live up to their loyalty pledge of supporting the nominee. They even lacked the class to congratulate Trump on his victory.

Ryno acts like the 10.6 million of us that actually voted for Trump -— don’t count!! I think he is an arrogant sob.

Ryan is another fraud, another Democrat operative posing as a Republican and he needs to at the very least be booted from the party.

I think there’s bound to be a problem if you fully trust anyone who is running for president. I recommend reading Trump’s books. The Art of the Deal and Time To Get Tough specifically. That will give you a good idea of where Trump is coming from.

That’s what I did. Then I looked at what Trump’s motives might be. I suppose he could be simply saying these things to get elected, but to what end? To be hated as much as the political class that does the same thing? I don’t see that as realistic, but it’s still a gamble. The odds are still better than with any other candidate.

People tell me that it’s just Trump’s giant ego that makes him want the power of the job. But everything I know about Trump tells me that it’s more than that: it’s about his legacy and being remembered as the guy who pulled America out of the fire.

Unfortunately for Trump’s critics, in order to be remembered that way, he has to actually FIX things and accomplish the task he wants to be remembered for. Therefore, his giant ego actually works for us, because our end goals are the same: to fix the problems that are choking the country.

Trump is the safest bet moving forward. But nothing is ever a sure thing.

I don’t know. He has made inconsistent statements on abortion (he doesn’t get this issue) and Israel which are my two biggies. I would be happy if he took care of our military and ISIS. Economically, he has some good thoughts, but can he pass them with our Congress? Still, bottom line he has been a moderate to a liberal for 40 years. I do not trust him as far as I can throw him. And I’m tired of eating the crap sandwiches the RNC puts forward. If anyone doesn’t think the RNC allowed this, they are naive. He was chosen for this time. Whole lot of posturing going on.

Is that you Paul? Is “vote your conscience” the new definition of “my word is my bond?” Buzz off, Ryan. You are nothing but a self-important, mealy-mouthed, opportunistic climber with no scruples at all.

“Get over your I problem or leave.”

Precisely. Coyness is cute in debutantes, but not in this critical election: “I’m not sure what to do (sigh) shall I stay, or should I go? My petals are still bruised ...
Clinton or Trump, what to do, what to do.”
Get over yourself.

All Paul Ryno wants from Trump is assurances that he will give the GOP-e want they want, and in exchange for what?

That they will “treat him fairly”? Been there, done that.
This time Trump talks, they listen; Trump puts a paper in front of them, they sign.
