FBI Director Says Legal War On Encryption Far From Over
Apple Insider ^ | 05/13/2016 | Mikey Campbell

FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday said the U.S. government will continue to wage legal war with tech companies to gain access to encrypted devices, intimating that such measures are weakening terror organizations like ISIL.

At an FBI briefing, Comey said gaining privileged access to passcode locked — or otherwise protected — devices is an important national security concern as encryption is now "essential tradecraft" of terror groups, reports Reuters....

More Big Brother BS. They want to snoop into citizens' phones, but Allah forbid they look at a public Facebook page to spot suspicious jihadi screeds....

They want to see EVERYTHING of ours, but we still aren’t allowed to see Obala’s birth certificate.

Why not just attack ISIS (ISIL is Obama’s imposed name
to direct his terrorist group) and KILL THEM,
instead of arming them, instead of letting them into the
USA without passports, instead of helping them?

Oh, come on, haven't you heard that oh-so-convincing argument "if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't care if they look in your phone, or your drawers, or your backyard?" I'm sure it will be posted in this thread.

Those who advocate that argument conveniently leave aside the fact that the very people who want to know everything you are doing get to move the goalposts as to what constitutes "something to hide." This year various federal agencies put over 80,000 pages of new regulations into effect. We've probably violated a few of them before breakfast.

Encryption is the only defense we have against identity theft.

Cripple encryption, and more of us will be victimized.

But that’s a small price to pay to let the totalitarians run wild.

Uh NO, Abstinence works every time it is tried, if you make NO Electronic Transactions the chances of your identity being stolen are about the same as OJ Confessing.

I think Comey should STFU, and start recommending an indictment for Hillary Clinton.

And if he can't get that done, maybe he should make me a sammich.

No indictments for Hill or any of her tribe, over Benghazi, gun running, or the whole server event? With all they are collecting, this should have been done a long time ago. Or maybe it’s just the common people that are under surveillance, while others get a free pass.

If everything is so transparent, where’s Obama’s birth certificate? And where is Cruz’s?

Some people are more equal than others......................

Would be nice if it were so simple. But carrying a lot of cash is an invitation for some local police to seize it with Asset Forfeiture.

Cash is KING and leaves NO TRACE!

Within five years there will be no cash, count on it.

If our government has a mans to access your data then so will everyone else. Keep in mind that virtually every government server has been hacked, maybe they should be using the technology that they can't seem to crack. All they need to do is buy a few phones, they get the secure encryption for free.

If you have a job, they track your employment electronically, even if they pay you in cash. If you go visit a doctor, even if you pay in cash, there is an identity trail in the doctor’s electronic patient system. If you have health insurance and the doctor bills them the insurance company has an electronic copy of your identity. If you have a driver’s license, a fishing license, if you have utilities that you pay in cash, if .....

Now, some random dude who manages your doctor’s system has a smart phone that he set up to receive alerts from the doctor’s system if there is a problem, but he doesn’t secure his phone properly goes to Starbuck’s and connects to their open wi-fi. Five minutes later, while he’s mulling over the menu, the hacker sitting nearby injects a reverse-shell onto his phone, begins reading his email, finds the headers from the doctor’s mail server and commences penetrating the server. Without you even having a credit card, that hacker now knows a great deal about you. At a number of points, the kinds of technologies we’re talking about can be effectively used to defend against that scenario (which is very, very real). But the government wants to undermine that protection. We should all be on the encryption bandwagon, because it’s not just about you defending yourself. Unless you’re moving to Alaska off-grid, I don’t see how being subject to identity theft is avoidable.

One more thing. Even if you’re clean, identity theft can land you in jail. In college a dorm mate of mine, a genuine, practicing, even evangelizing Christian was very publicly arrested in the dorm because .... a guy in a nearby town was passing bad checks with the same name, DOB, etc. It took a while for the cops to realize this wasn’t their man, but he still suffered the shame, however brief, of being thought of as a thief and he wore the cuffs just the same.

I think all bills before congress need to be posted on the internet for 90 days before they can be voted on. It’s clear the congressmen are not reading them. If they don’t have time to read it, they shouldn’t be allowed to vote on it. And if they don’t read it, lots of Americans will find the time to read it and comment on it in public forums, like Free Republic.

And the senate was supposed to be a place for honest debate. The senate of today, appears to be neither.

I don’t know how much influence Trump could have if he gets elected, but he sure has his work cut out for him if he does.

I encourage everyone here to think about being part of the Tor network even if you never use it. Set your computer up as a relay to help grow the network. The Darknet and Bitcoin are scaring the snot out of the establishment - an entire network that laughs at DCMA and subpeonas, an internationally-recognized method of payment that they can’t control.

...intimating that such measures are weakening terror organizations like ISIL.

What absolute BS - they claim they had several terrorists, who murdered Americans, on their RADAR but did nothing until they actually committed an act of terror. Pretty sneaky way to try to blame it on those that won't give them unconstrained access to everybody's business....

Speaking of police failing to do enough, here's Comey's explanation for that:
Weeks after a sharp rebuke from the White House, FBI Director James Comey is sticking to his claim that putting police under a microscope is leading to an uptick in crime.

On Thursday, Comey delivered remarks at an FBI field office in Kansas City, Mo., that echoed his previous concerns linking extra scrutiny on police to what he describes as a lack of enthusiasm to tackle violent crime.

“Hundreds of police officers and chiefs” have told Comey that the prospect of getting caught on camera and turned into a viral YouTube video have made them less willing to do their jobs, he said....

So, let me see if I have this straight....

1. Citizens should have no privacy against the police, even for their most private records.

2. Police should have absolute privacy against the citizens, even for stuff they do out in public view.

Maybe that would make sense if I were a professional politician.

I like the way you think and your ability to lay it out in plain language.

You too must feel that Alice's "Wonderland" is a much saner place than the world we live in.
