Recent events in the U.S. are destroying Americans' ability to connect to God, according to Cardinal Robert Sarah, a native of the West African nation of Guinea.
In a keynote address at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Cardinal Sarah said that in the United States, "God is being eroded, eclipsed, liquidated," Catholic News Agency reports.
Cardinal Sarah pointed out specific events "in the name of 'tolerance'" that have contributed to this erosion, including "the legalization of same sex marriage, the obligation to accept contraception within health care programs, and even 'bathroom bills' that allow men to use the womens restrooms and locker rooms."
"Should not a biological man use the mens restroom?" he said in his prepared remarks. "How simpler can that concept be?"
He further warned that subversions of the church's teachings including a "demonic 'gender ideology'" could lead to the family unit becoming "a place where human beings can be humanly and spiritually wounded.
To combat these subversions, Cardinal Sarah encouraged the audience to "be prophetic, be faithful, and above all, pray."
"The Holy Father [Pope Francis] openly and vigorously defends Church teaching on contraception, abortion, homosexuality, reproductive technologies, the education of children and much more," he noted.
"In the end, it is God or nothing."
House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sister Constance Veit of the Little Sisters of the Poor also delivered remarks prior to the cardinal's keynote address.

Well that’s a mighty nice way to excuse all this wind....
Reread my post please. I am not excusing it.
What you’re doing shouts louder than what you’re saying.
Beat me to it.
God can NEVER be “Eroded, Eclipsed, Liquidated”.
Sure, we can ignore Him, disobey Him, deny Him or forget Him, all at our own peril. But God will always be there. He will always take us back if we repent and turn our hearts to Him and ask His forgiveness he gives to us through the blood shed by Jesus Christ His only Son.
I pray the vast majority of Americans wake up, repent and turn their hearts back to God so they can be saved and our nation blessed.
What I a doing? Just what is that please tell.
They finally came clean and admitted they had nothing to do with God, so their culpability is the less.
The collective you.
Yes... those who talk this way are speaking as though they could make God stand.
What is suffering is the relationship TO God.
The collective you? What is that? I am an individual not a collective. I speak for myself only.
What church are you speaking so airily of?
>> “God is being eroded, eclipsed, liquidated,”
No he’s not. God is the creator of the universe. His own chosen people turned away from him time and time again. The dream of a “Christian America” is a human creation. God delights in each of us coming to him, one at a time.
He's a clear thinker, solid in orthodoxy, and a straight shooter. Such a refreshing man - I believe that Africa will help stand for morality and Godly action amidst the chaos in the Christian West.
What he says here is true - it's a pity that it's brought out the Catholic dislikers/bashers. Our Church, like every denomination/group out there, is made of humans who are sinners. So bashing the inadequacies of some of our leaders is pointless. There are non-Catholic Christian leaders that I respect for their very public witness (even though many are not too keen on the Catholic religion). We need to hang together or we shall surely hang separately.
This fiction dies hard... and I’m not even sure our own Jim Rob is out of denial about it (and if someone tells on me, someone tells on me).
All we can do below is BEG. We cannot establish God!
The idea that God can be effaced is erroneous, and if that is a Catholic doctrine, well if the shoe fits he should wear it!
What we can efface (and what God can rebuild) is our good relationship to Him.
What church? The Roman Catholic church. That is the one which has preserved the word and tradition of the early church of Christ for over 2000 years. The church that Christ himself established “on this rock” in appointing Peter to be it’s first leader. That church.
You don’t know enough to be commenting on this thread.

As humans, all we can do is stand out from the crowd as salt and light. But, everyone wants to wait for the “Christian Nation” to be created first so they can continue to blend in with the pack. They don’t want to be the “weirdo” who won’t go to the sports bar for beer and football on Sunday or the “bad parent” who tells their children that church is more important than soccer or Tae Kwon Do.
Following Jesus is more than putting a chrome fish on the back of the minivan. The more that God is pushed out of the public eye, the brighter we must shine.
And, yes, we must BEG.
Point taken, however, it is not complete if you don’t acknowledge that the Pope is in favor of many things that should make us all shudder. His recent interview suggesting that isis is not islam and that Christians are equal to them...what??
For him to NOT forcefully denounce the slaughter of Christians in the ME, means what to you? For me, I can’t take all the other ‘given’ stances he mouths, as much more than head patting.
I have news for him. The family is often where the worst hurt, physically and spiritually, has been happening for a long time.
It SHOULDN'T be by any means, but we are most vulnerable to those we love and are closest to and they can hurt us as no one else can.
So it happens.
