Wisconsin Simplifies Hunting Regulations. No Back Tags

Wisconsin Backtag last Year 2015

In 1942, Wisconsin required deer hunters to wear a back tag so that they could be identified at a distance.  The exact what purpose of the new regulation is not clear.  It may have been related to WWII, because the back tag regulation was put in place between Pearl Harbor and the first deer season that occurred after the start of the war.  Perhaps Wisconsin legislators feared armed German or Japanese agents roaming the Wisconsin North woods.  Perhaps it was simply part of the Roosevelt push to create more bureaucratic administrative control over all aspects of life.  Wisconsin was a center of “progressive” thought.  The back tag requirement was a law passed by the legislature, not a regulation imposed by the Wisconsin Fish and Game department.

It gradually became known that back tags were not very useful.  By 1994, there were only 11 states that required a back tag for hunting.  by 2005, the number had dwindled to 5 states.  By 2016, only Wisconsin and New York still had the antiquated statute.  from huntingny.com:

In 1996, Wisconsin passed a strong right to keep and bear arms amendment to the state Constitution. They have passed one of the least restrictive shall issue concealed carry permit laws in the nation. They have protected open carry that existed since before the State existed. They hav removed nearly all the restrictions on the carry of knives that accumulated during the "progressive" era.

On Wisconsin!

Proofread, proofread, proofread. Very poorly written.

Still interesting, thanks for posting.

“Too bad he faltered in the presidential primaries.”

Walker? I was relieved when he bailed out of the race.

He’s a Romney acolyte. Establishment GOP through and through. He asked the other candidates to take down Trump, on his way out.

I agree that Walker is getting it done in Wisconsin, but that is about the depth of the political pool he should be wading in.

As a presidential candidate, he did not have deep pockets and had only one issue that set him apart. He beat the unions.

As the old saying goes, “There’s a horse for every course .” He just wasn’t the one for president.

He, as well as Kasick, should remain governors.

“Perhaps Wisconsin legislators feared armed German or Japanese agents roaming the Wisconsin North woods.”

One could probably read the debate transcripts to find out if that was the case, but it is actually very likely.

The Japanese actually invaded Alaska in June of 42. A little known fact. They were quickly routed out, but made the obvious point that the north was a bit of an open door.

However, I believe it would’ve been easy for the nips to forge such a tag so it would’ve been easily flouted.

So if that was the justification, it was, like happens a lot today, someone desirous of expanding gov’t taking advantage of a political situation.
