'No Muslims allowed': how nationalism is rising in Aung San Suu Kyi's Myanmar
The Guardian ^ | 23 May 2016 | Poppy McPherson

At the entrance to Thaungtan village there’s a brand new sign, bright yellow, and bearing a message: “No Muslims allowed to stay overnight. No Muslims allowed to rent houses. No marriage with Muslims.”

The post was erected in late March by Buddhist residents of the village in Myanmar’s lush Irrawaddy Delta region who signed, or were strong-armed into signing, a document asserting that they wanted to live separately.

Since then a couple of other villages across the country have followed suit. Small but viciously insular, these “Buddhist-only” outposts serve as microcosms of the festering religious tensions that threaten Myanmar’s nascent experiment with democracy.

....Nanda Kyaw, a Muslim taxi driver who was beaten outside Shwedagon Pagoda, from which Islamic vendors were evicted a few weeks earlier, says he is still getting headaches.

“I have to drive every day for my survival,” says the slight 31-year-old.

At least once a day, he says, a passenger waves him on when they see his goatee. But the attack in April came as a surprise.

A group of young people wound down their windows and shouted racially charged insults. Then, he said, they swerved in front of his car and beat him with iron rods. They left him bleeding from his mouth and head.

“Some people stopped their cars and watched a little bit. It’s because it was a problem between a Muslim guy and a Buddhist guy, they are afraid.”

“When you manage to get even the Buddhists pissed off at you, you know you’re a real pain in the ass.”

I’ve seen the Buddhists in action. They don’t mess around. If a muslims so much as touches a hair on the head of a Buddhist woman the Buddhist men will go in and burn down a Muslim village, wipe it out. They don’t mess around.

Sounds like Poppy McPherson needs a “date” with 30 or 40 ISIS jihadists to get her mind right...

Well Islam is pretty much at war with the other religion.

Which is failing because look at the growth of political parties that are right-leaning or are bordering on the right, this is a global change going on.

That changed in 2012. The Burmese realized that by shutting themselves off from the world, they were becoming little more than a province of China. Since then they have turned around. They are by no means fully democratic, but the lower house (with very little power, but SOME nonetheless) has been freely elected with Aung San Suu Kyi’s party winning the majority of seats

They’re not really a US client state — they’re trying to balance China with an alliance of US-India etc.

There are a lot of Western liberals who blame the current jihadi wave on the actions of the west, but Buddhists and Hindus know it goes back well before Europe was a world influence.

The world’s greatest genocide in history brought on by the Muslim Conquests spreading to India, an estimated hundred million dead. And it included attempts to wipe out Buddhism.

Those parties are not right wing as the USA understands the term. They are “right wing” per the USSR’s definition, i.e. to the USSR’s right because they do not impose state atheism particularly. The USA’s definition of conservatism is rare to nonexistent outside our borders, frankly.

If these villages were really as "viciously insular" as this clueless writer supposes, their signs would have said "no non-Buddhists." But they didn't. They said "no Muslims." But the author of this piece either fails to understand the distinction or is too PC blinded to see it.

I like your post.

“If you look at the map of the Muslim world, at the center of it, you have some of the worst most unequal most repressive societies on Earth (e.g. Saudi Arabia),”

Yet, the U.S. has done absolutely nothing about Saudi Arabia. In fact, some say Saudi Arabian regime is ‘secular’. Why? Because of political & economic alliance with the U.S., even if it to date they chop off hands and heads — so, one presumes, as long as you are a Muzzie in bed with the U.S., that’s ok.

“and then at the edges, where Muslims live in proximity to significant numbers of non-Muslims, there is conflict, from Burma, to Chechnya, to Israel, to Nigeria, to Indonesia, to Western China, to India, etc., etc.”

Pretty much same points as above. Actually, the muslim vs. non-muslim conflict has existed for centuries since Islam was conceived in today’s Saudi Arabia. BUT, it was never so prevalent or highlighted as it has been since 9/11 in the West & the rest of the world.

“The conflict is not between Muslims and “the West”, the conflict is between Muslims and non-Muslims.”

You’re correct to some degree. But, ‘the conflict’ is not only between muslims and non-muslims. It is also between muslims and muslims, as bizarre as it may sound. Pakistan, for example, has had many more Islamic terrorist acts in any year, over the last 30 years, than the U.S., Europe and Israel combined.

Afghanistan was rather Westernized & civilized before all that crap happened with the Soviet invasion and then the U.S. arming and radicalizing groups of muslim fighters (later known as Taliban) to fight the Soviets.

These are some of the things we don’t quite hear as much about in the West, as we would if they happened in a Western country.

The Islamic terrorism was all pretty much dormant until 1979. It gradually spread thereafter. And, has gotten worse since then, year after year. Why?

I don’t know how to post a picture here, but if you google “Mecca highway sign” you’ll find loads of illustrations of how Saudi Arabia blatantly posts signs saying that non-Muslims are not allowed in their “holy” city. So where’s the outrage on that?

Yes, the conflict is also Muslim vs. Muslim, I tried to allude to that above where I noted that 100% Muslim societies are not only horrifically repressive and unequal, but also riven by (internal) strife.

But you also raise an interesting question, which I don’t know that I have an answer for, which is why the upswing in Muslim violence 1979 to present? I imagine there are books on the subject written by people vastly more knowledgeable than myself, but I’d guess that you first had the general decline of the Islamic world relative to the West maybe 1500-1900, which made them weak and irrelevant for the most part, then you had oil which upped the stakes, then decolonization, but the decolonization process probably diverted a lot of would-be Islamic militants toward nationalism and then Communism during the Cold War. When neither of those delivered any improvement in their general status, Islam became “the answer” and the rest as they say, “was history”.
