Behind Mitt Romney’s Increasingly Lonely Challenge to Donald Trump

Mitt Romney’s advisers begged him not to go to war with...Trump. After he decided to go ahead, Mr. Trump dismissed him as “lightweight” and “failed candidate.” This week, Newt Gingrich called him “pathetic.”

Mr. Romney, sticking to his guns, has become a rare figure in American history—a former presidential nominee openly defying the man succeeding him as his party’s standard-bearer.

Sitting at his home on the Pacific Ocean last week, Mr. Romney reflected on the waves he created by attacking Mr. Trump, how his family helped persuade him it was the right thing to do, and how he increasingly finds himself a voice in the wilderness.

“Friends warned me, ‘Don’t speak out, stay out of the fray,’ because criticizing Mr. Trump will only help him by giving him someone else to attack,” Mr. Romney said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal—the first time the 2012 GOP nominee discussed in depth his reasons for going after Mr. Trump.

“They were right. I became his next target, and the incoming attacks have been constant and brutal.” He said he had no illusions he would alter Mr. Trump’s progress toward the nomination or spark a meaningful independent candidacy.

His motivation: “I wanted my grandkids to see that I simply couldn’t ignore what Mr. Trump was saying and doing, which revealed a character and temperament unfit for the leader of the free world.”

Today, the GOP anti-Trump chorus is dwindling, leaving Mr. Romney among the few making the case publicly.

Mr. Trump, in an interview on Wednesday, said of Mr. Romney: “Once a choker, always a choker. I’ve got a store worth more than he is.” He said Mr. Romney’s attack “has nothing to do with his country. It has to do with me. I’m the one who forced him out”...

The “long shot” becomes even longer. Mitt had his chance in 2012, it was handed to him by both the Republican National Committee then, and he was GIVEN a clear opportunity to take the Presidential election, because of the issue handed to him by the Benghazi crisis.

Yet Mitt failed to take up that opportunity, by exposing the complete incompetence and unworthiness of the Current Occupant to continue to occupy the Oval Office. Simply because the Current Occupant was absent in those critical hours from the beginnings of the events on the eve of September 11, 2012, was proof enough that the call could come in at 3 AM, and nobody was there to answer the phone.

And worse, the reason given for the absence was to prepare to go on a fund-raising trip to California. How much more must the Current Occupant prove his unfitness for the job, than that response? And this is not even to shift the blame down to Herself, who had the authority already to call upon support from the US Department of Defense to extract the State Department officials.

If it did not matter then, it does not matter now.

Like it has for Jeb Bush, the ship has long since sailed.

“the man succeeding him as his party’s standard-bearer. “

Mitt was never that.

In Romney’s 2012 primary campaign, his team systematically assassinated the character of more conservative rivals, including Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain. The difference between Romney and Trump is that Romney always hid behind anonymous smears leaked to sympathetic media mouthpieces. While I may not always like the tone of what Trump says, at least he has the courage and honesty to say things directly himself.

Mitt’s self-serving agenda was this:

He was to spearhead the “Stop Trump” movement and throw the convention into chaos with a view to keeping Trump from the 1,237 delegates forcing the convention to choose a compromise candidate.

Of course Romney was hoping that that compromise candidate would be him.

Now if Romney had only fought Obama as hard as he fought Trump this year, he’d likely be the incumbent president today and on his way to a second term unopposed.

“Romney has become a kind of Don Quixote caricature”

Yeah, making a fool out of himself. Reminds me of a spoiled adolescent girl stamping her foot and crying because she can’t have her way.

Mitt Romney - the guy who lost twice And didn’t even have the nomination the second time

THREE times. He couldn't even outmaneuver McCain & Squirrel Popcorn Huckabee in 2008.

Mitt? Its all about him, his vanity and his failure.

Obama was a beatable candidate and Mittens simply didn’t have the guts to win.

Now he lashes out at Trump for appearing to do what he couldn’t.

What a classy guy.

You haven’t created any waves, Romney.

Everyone just hates you. You are Judas, a turncoat and a loser.

You are sowing the seeds that will last for eternity that will forever haunt any relative of yours with the name Romney.

Mitt, go home.

Romney knows a lot about being unfit.

If Romney had shown half as much fight against 0bama as he has against Trump, he’d probably be running for re-election now, and Trump would still be doing The Apprentice.

Romney know something about Ryan that he is holding over PR’s head. Whatever it is PR it is so bad that PR will have to forfeit his house seat rather than expose it !

Romeny is a three-time loser.

2008, 2012 and 2016. If Willard could have gotten any traction he would have run again, and there is the FEC filing as a candidate for president to prove it.

Romney, you cannot lead by cowering or playing nice when your opponent shamelessly spreads lies and slander about you. You showed your inability to lead when you ran against what is arguably one of the most incompetent and weak presidents the country has ever had, and you couldn't even make the case as to why voters should support you over him.

The good thing is that Romney's poor leadership skills make this effort to turn people against Trump an absolute joke. He might as well be a gnat attempting to stop a stampede of cattle.

MItt Romney has destroyed what little honor, dignity and loyalty he had. IMHO.....I almost believe that Mitt Romney was in full cahoots with Obama.....and purposely played missing the last month of the Obama/Romney POTUS race in 2012!!! Obama & Clinton, both adore....GOP traitor Mitt Romney!!! Romney...poor fool has no idea...that no one in the entire USA gives adarn what he thinks or says. He has self-destructed!!!

Say what you will about Romney he would have been a breath of fresh air to clear the stench out of the White House if only he’d had the guts to stay on offense during the 2012 campaign. Playing “nice-guy” gets you second place in politics!
As for those here who call Romney a democrat, you have a point, but could a real conservative EVER win in Ma.? Likely not! I do not recall seeing anything about Romney writing checks to Hillary, Schumer, Reid, etc. etc. as did your chosen one, Trump.
Yes, I’ll vote for Trump but not with the enthusiasm some show here. I do believe the Supreme Court appointments are the most important factor for the future of conservatism this go-around, and I know what Hillary will do if she gets elected and God-forbid the Senate rides her coat-tails into power!
God help the US....send Hillary to the compost pile of history (if not Leavenworth) and forever rid us of anything Clinton!!
