Movies and TV shows for that matter usually have two different themes. The main one and another just to keep the audience from getting attention boredom. Sometimes they have more than two but two is typical.

In the case of Midway, it was just like you described. The love story just was not well done and seemed tacked on. Otherwise the movie was pretty good.

My understanding is that it was also scuttled, although I may be mistaken.

All four of the Japanese carriers were scuttled. But the Mikuma went down without the help of her countrymen, not counting induced explosions. The other two ships to be lost in the battle (the U.S. carrier Yorktown and destroyer Hammann) were done in by Japanese torpedoes.
