The Reagans were widely criticized for largely ignoring the AIDS epidemic.
If anyone largely ignored the AIDS epidemic, it was gays themselves, who refused to change their behavior one iota in response to the health threat while expecting everyone else to bend over backwords and address an epidemic they themselves could have eradicated quickly and permanently.
