Cruz-McConnell tension flares anew as GOP leader casts Texan as bit player in Senate

Before Ted Cruz framed his presidential campaign as a crusade against the Washington “cartel,” he engaged in a series of skirmishes with fellow Republicans, in particular Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky....

Cruz has defined himself as the pious political 'outsider' who was going to save America from it's corrupted government. That game only works when you are new, with little or no record in play.

Now Cruz arrives back to the Senate as an outcast that will have a hard time accomplishing any major legislative achievement if he continues to play the outsider game. Cruz needs a new game to be a 2020 potus contender. OTOH, he should focus on just doing his job as a US Senator.

Mitch completely ignores Cruz in his new memoir indicating he sees him as an insignificant member of the senate.

In reference to the Senate, he told USA Today that Cruz has "maybe one follower on a good day." - (Sen. Mike Lee).

Cruz fell into a trap of his own design. I loved it when he called McConnell a liar because he was a liar and I loved it when he was ‘drafting’ in Trumps wake. He seemed very competent then.

He should have gracefully bowed out after New Hampshire. Definitely after South Carolina. Whatever chances he had of winning the nomination was completely overshadowed by the fact he would never win the Presidency vs Hillary.

I think Cruz can possibly get his mojo back if over the next 10 - 12 months, he slowly cozies up to Trump. Right now there is still a lot of resentment in both the Trump and Cruz camps, but if just before or early into the convention, Cruz endorses Trump and make a few speeches supporting him, I think he can be a force in the Senate. Or my preference: SCOTUS.

He could do that. I see no indication that he wants to.

Cubanadians are not eligible to be President.

Arrogant Cubanadians who run anyway and present themselves as something they are not are frauds.

But I don’t think Cruz’s ego will let him “cozy” up to Trump. He still sees himself as the anointed one who has Satan standing in his way. He is planning on still trying to deny Trump the nomination. Gathering more delegates who are loyal to him, asking delegates not to show up for the first vote, like that. He’s not winning any friends in the Trump camp acting like that.

Wow. Just who could have predicted this?/s

We tried to tell the Cruzers that the GOPe were snakes, NOT Cruz’s “allies” or “supporters”-— but nooooooo. They were going to support him as the lesser of two evils.

How’d that work out for ya? Now he is not only a failed candidate but more marginalized than ever in the Senate.

“He should have gracefully bowed out after New Hampshire. Definitely after South Carolina.”

I agree, but he is being prodded along by his money handlers behind the scenes. South Carolina should have been the indicator he had no chance of success in November. They have successfully chosen the winning candidate every time since the 1970’s. He did not fool them, not one bit.

After NH, he won MAINE. Except we all know there is no way in hell that he really did win Maine. Someone in the GOP gave him Maine as a win to keep the ball rolling and keep one of theirs in the game. I doubt he had control over this, but they stole that race for Cruz.

His popularity was so pathetic in Texas that he had to run back to ensure that he did not lose his home state. Which explains why he had little or no time to campaign in the South. If the forerunner had been Jeb or Mitt, the GOPe would have given Ted the hook in early March.

And there is this perpetuated insanity in believing that a very unpopular man in every single Southern state and every single county in three battleground states could possibly win in the GE. -All backed by fictional polls showing him winning over Hillary to egg him on.

I think it more likely that Cruz will work to get Hillary elected. A president Hillary means Cruz can take another shot in 2020. A president Trump means he has no shot in 2020.

Yes. Now would be the time to assert the Constitutional qualifications and reiterate that all future attempts to usurp the office of the presidency must be rejected.

Cruz signed up with a desperate GOPe for support against Trump, then failed in his task. What did he expect was going to happen after failing such a master???

Interesting that Cruz was so able to twist and manipulate rules and people to line up GOP delegates but can’t even play checkers with any of his fellow Senators

I look forward to seeing you eat your words. You've been ensnared by another round of clickbait from the Dallas Morning News. Todd Gilman is as much a lefty as anyone from the NY Times or WaPo.

I felt like all the candidates got caught up in playing this waiting game. ... “Trump will implode and then the competition starts”. Trump never imploded. He schlonged them all.

He destroyed Jeb right at the gate opening, clubbed him behind the starting line. He suffocated the majority of the rest and the ones left over at the end, he just whittled them down with dozens upon dozens of bleeding cuts.

Cruz’s greatest mistakes — Calling out New York Values. It wasn’t only New Yorker’s who found this insulting. Next was connecting himself to Glen Beck.

I thought I'd never say anything like this, but I've gotta take Mitch's side in this deal.

Mitch knows all about Ted and that's why he wouldn't pass a Senate resolution to (supposedly) declare him a Natural Born Citizen. So he has done at least one thing right in his time as majority leader.

Now that Trump has beaten Cruz like a red headed stepchild, remember that Cruz and his most extreme cult followers ALL persist in painting the Cuban-Canadian import as “The Next Reagan” and Cruz was never bashful about drawing comparisons between our 40th President and himself.

In my opinion, Cruz is attempting to make history repeat itself, and this year (2016) is in his mind, just like 1976 when the Gipper was unable to prevail at the GOP convention that year, and President Gerald Ford was nominated.

As we all know, the ‘RAT Jimmy Carter won the election, which began 4 of the most incompetent and destructive years in America’s history pre-Obama, and that led to the conservative tidal wave which was Ronald Reagan in 1980.

This is all about Cruz attempting to live out his life as a crypto-fantasy of a reincarnated Reagan. But unlike Cruz, Reagan ran a clean campaign, didn’t run his rallies like religious tent revivals, and did not preach to the crowds about the necessity to “raise up and energize the Body of Christ” like Elmer Gantry.

Cruz’ strategy is to do everything possible to undermine Donald Trump, he is a closet #NEVERTRUMPER as are many of his supporters, and it is very likely that he believes that 4 years of Hillary Rotten Criminal would pave the way for his triumphant victory in 2020, exactly 40 years after the Reagan landslide, and some students of Biblical history will tell you that 40 years is considered a generation which to Cruz would indicate the Almighty’s seal of approval.

This is what happens when a candidate begins to believe their own hype, and mixes politics with religion as Cruz has done. It is a toxic and unhealthy mix.

We all knew Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a friend of ours, and Ted Cruz is NO Ronald Reagan.

Sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas.

You hitched your wagon to Cruz. How’s that itch feeling?
