John McCain slams key veterans’ advocacy groups
msnbc ^

Posted on 06/02/2016 8:40:35 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

Most of the time, major political figures try to stay on the good side of the nation’s leading veterans’ organizations, but Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is comfortable going in a different direction.

The Republican senator appeared on his daughter’s radio show late last week – just a few days before Memorial Day – and Meghan McCain asked about the need for improvements in the VA system. The GOP lawmaker, facing a tough re-election fight this year, didn’t hold back. JOHN MCCAIN: I blame some of the old veterans’ service organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion. They are against the Choice Card. Why would they be against the Choice Card

MEGHAN MCCAIN: Why are they against it?

JOHN MCCAIN: They have been co-opted by that system. They have this symbiotic relationship with the VA bureaucracy. For them to say they are against a veteran having a choice to me is unconscionable. After expressing his deep “disappointment” with some of the nation’s largest advocacy groups working on behalf of veterans, the Republican senator added that veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan “are best represented by the Concern Veterans of America.”

There are a growing number of vets who don’t buy off on fixing or renovating the VA for the 99th time. Maybe there’s still some support for the VA but it is lessening as each year goes by. I won’t say that McCain is wrong on this issue but we are sharply divided on the future of the VA.

I see McCain is following his President’s lead, insulting veterans and their organizations.
Someone tell me again about how Donald Trump insulted McCain’s military service.

Hey Mississippi, I will trade you a John McCain AND a Jeff Flake for one Chris McDaniel

I cannot imagine getting better care anywhere than I’ve gotten at VA Palo Alto. I’m truly blessed to have them there for me.

Aside from McCain's triple standards on virtually everything, it would be nice if he actually listened to the objections of the VFW and other organizations. Their critical objection is that the entire purpose of the ChoiceCard is to sweep under the table any issues that veterans might be having as a class, and therefore, no longer recognize such issues.

An easy solution is what the VFW & others have long been advocating for - an independent health study of veterans records which would track common health issues. While I'm loathe to create any new agency, board, commission, etc, etc, etc since nothing created by government ever dies, this is probably something that needs to be done. To be perfectly honest, it is probably one of the best uses of the ‘thinking machines’ like Watson or DeepMind - have veteran health records constantly being inputted into the system and tell the machine to locate common ailments.

The second objection the VFW has is that without the VA, many outreach opportunities to bring healthcare services to veterans will be eliminated. I do not agree with this philosophy, I think it'll be vastly expanded. I'd imagine many healthcare organizations would excitedly fund and expand the roving VA motorhomes.

Rather than attack the objectors, McCain should stop acting like the liberal democrat he is and instead pretend to be the conservative he portrays and actually work towards solutions that address the concerns of constituents. Or not and get voted out of office.

The reason why the Choice card isn’t used is because they made it unusable. It was all eye wash and this dummy McCain can’t figure out why EVERY veterans organization is against using it.

I've been extremely satisfied with the care I've received from the VA hospital in Shreveport, LA, including cancer treatment and surgery. When I needed a specific procedure that they couldn't accommodate for several months THEY scheduled it with a local civilian doctor at a local hospital within a couple of weeks.

The choice system works here, well!

At this point, I don’t care a wit that McCain was a prisoner of war. He is a traitorous piece of trash, apologies to any trash that might be offended by my comparison.

McCain also says we are not suppose to listen to veterans groups, but should listen to Concerned Veterans of America. CVA is a 501 (c)4 who is solely funded by Koch enterprises.

So don’t listen to all the other member funded veterans organizations. Listen to his masters. This idiot needs to retire.

My vet friends in Phoenix say the VA there is one of the worst in the system.

And what exactly has those vets' senator been doing in Congress to improve their lot. Nada. Nothing. Zilch.

Blowhard fake conservative. Publicly admitted he almost switched allegiances to the demoCRAP party in 2000 and considered John Kerry's offer to be his vice presidential running mate in 2004. And don't forget, he was one of the Keating Five. Carpet-bagger opportunist.

Just wait until President Trump privatizes the VA and vets no longer need DAV, VFW, etc.
