About that Orlando AR-15… it wasn’t
Hot Air.com ^ | June 14, 2016 | JAZZ SHAW

Some day, in a far off, idealistic future, we may yet live to see a time when the media reports on a story involving guns and gets the details right. But that day has apparently not yet arrived. After the news of the Orlando shooting broke, the focus of the anti-gun press immediately settled on the long rifle legally purchased by the ISIS aficionado for the terror attack. (He wasn’t on the terrorist watch list at the time, Hillary, just in case you were wondering.) It was immediately announced that an AR-15 was once again at the center of the action. This led to lengthy dissertations from sources such as Rolling Stone, supplying us with Everything You Need to Know About the AR-15.

Politico jumped into the analysis with detailed technical specifications regarding The Most Political Gun in America.

If there’s one weapon that reflects the intractability of the gun debate in the United States, the AR-15 is it. The gun is endlessly customizable and available from many different manufacturers, but all AR-15s share a common lineage, dating back to a prototype built by ArmaLite for the U.S. military in the late 1950s, and they all accept the same interchangeable magazines. For gun advocates, the AR-15 has become an emblem of patriotism and even virility.

That’s some really helpful information. Or at least it would be except for one small, inconvenient detail. As our colleagues at Bearing Arms point out, once we finally got a look at the weapon it turned out to not be an AR-15 at all.

The rifle used by the Islamist terrorist in Orlando was instead a Sig Sauer MCX carbine, a modular, multi-caliber (able to swap to different calibers, including 5.56 NATO, 300 BLK, and 7.62×39) rifle system that sometimes utilizes STANAG magazines common to more than 60 different firearms, but otherwise has no major parts that interface with AR-15s in any way, shape or form.

This of course, will make no difference at all to the anti-gun politimedia, who don’t particularly care about factual accuracy and who likely wouldn’t be able to tell an AR-15 from a toaster oven if their lives depended on it.

SigSauer

Now, this isn’t a knock on Sig Sauer, a company which produces a fine line of equipment. (Though having done some comparative shopping myself in the past, they’re a bit on the high end of the price range. But hey… you get what you pay for.) The point here is that the media is falling all over themselves to demonize one of the most popular weapons in America. If the terrorist in Orlando had walked into that club wearing a vest packed with C-4 and blown up the building those victims would be just as dead but we’d be having a very different conversation today.

But since it was a shooting, the media is having a field day going after the manufacturer of the AR-15 rather than asking what we can do to detect and stop radical Islamic terrorists on our own shores.

People need to get this straight; an AR15 is NOT an assault weapon, when you pull the trigger it only fires one shot!
Many hunters use it for deer.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but although the lib’s suggest that the only purpose of these weapons is to kill people, military weapons along with their munitions are NOT designed to kill the enemy. They are designed to injure the enemy. Hence the copper clad ammo...

The round is designed to pass through the foe, there by taking out not just the target but the 2 or three fighters that have to attend to him.

The truth is that a hunting rifle is designed to kill, not an assult rifle...

This is silly. Its not important that its a SIG and not an AR. These are just makes and models, not a difference in kind.

Its equivalent to an AR-15 in every important respect. It could have been a Mini-14 or Tavor or HK or AK just as well. If anyone is going to start banning they will get the lot of them no matter what make and model.

This muslim security guard must have worked a lot of overtime. I saw online that similar models run $1,600 to $1,900. Plus magazines at what - $40 a piece? And ammo, etc.

Earlier on The Five, Eric Bolling showed a clip of that idiot Alan Grayson who claimed that an A-15 could fire 700 rounds at one time.

Actually, the IDIOT's statement is worse, as he claimed that it would fire '700 rounds per minute'. Now, even if this MORON was confused (his natural state of mindlessness) by the real battle-rifle's (M16), rate-of-fire, that totally ignores the fact that there are very few 700 round magazines! So this BUFFOON's comment to the compliant MSM vacuum skull reporter only works for the grossly ignorant - which means his native IDIOTIC, MORONIC DEMOCRAP voters!

It doesn't matter. It was a semi-auto rifle and a huge push is on right now to get a new AWB bill passed by Congress.

A distinction without a difference . . .

BTW, I’m a certifiable gun nut and even I don’t care that the rifle was not specifically an AR-15. To quote our future president “What difference does it make?”

I’ve heard silly arguments on Free Republic over the years. This one deserves up there in the hall of fame. We are not talking about the finer points that saturate the gun blogs, this is a fundamental fight over the right to own and operate firearms. The Sig is essentially the same as any of the other variants of the M-16 .223 semiautomatic rifles.

These comments are completely missing the point. These people want to take away all of your weapons, lock you up in a concentration camp and send your family to a reeducation camp. Any of these models of semiautomatic rifles would have been sufficient for this lunatic purposes. A Remington 700, a Springfield M-1917, or even a .69 caliber Charleville flintlock musket would have been more than sufficient. When everyone in a club is disarmed by law, and required to depend on our government and their ignorant and incompetent political leaders to keep them safe we will continue to see these massacres.

Stop enabling these ludicrous arguments and make the point that American citizens have the fundamental right to defend themselves and that our law enforcement organizations can do nothing but string up crime scene tape after the killing is over.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I keep telling all my lib friends this.
They keep saying they’re OK with hunting guns but assault rifles should be banned. Then I tell them the difference as you have. Then they switch to... “Clip” capacity, waiting periods and closing loopholes.
It is so sad trying to educate those that don’t want to be educated when it flies in the face of their chosen idealism.

Unless he financed it. It’s easy to take a loan out for any amount when you have no intent to be around to make payments.
