The real issue would seem to be that many Midwesterners don’t “get” Florida. They aren’t used to the fact that dangerous prehistoric critters are a possibility in any murky bit of water, and even non-murky ones.

Not just Midwesterners. Anyone from any other part of the world wouldn’t know. I was stunned to see gators in all the golf course ponds when I visited South Carolina these last three years. I also didn’t know they can move fast.

I know Disney will be paying out BIG TIME. This is negligence, plain and simple. All they would have had to do would be to put up signs with images of alligators on them around all the ponds. Those poor parents thought the only risk of the water was drowning.

Rest in peace, precious baby. Prayers for the parents and loved ones. So sad and preventable. Mouse’s fault.

Well, I guess an autopsy will show water in the lungs if the child drowned.

Years ago, in San Francisco a couple said their son was kidnapped. The local TV news went to their house to interview the couple. They gave a tearful and heartfelt interview pleading for the return of their son. It turns out a day or so later the police found the dead kid in a suitcase in their closet. The child had been murdered by them and was there in the closet when the TV interviewers were there.

This could very well be a tragic accident, but I'm not convinced yet (maybe I've been watching too many reruns of Colombo.) From the reports I've heard, it was "movie night" near that area where the water is, and the family was just returning from the movie. That being the case, I would think there would also be a number of other people in the area as well. As i said earlier, I haven't heard anything about other eyewitnesses. Also, since there's always the possibility that alligators could slip into the water there from other locations, I would think that Disney would maintain some type of surveillance given the number of people visiting their resort on a daily basis. The body was found intact (others here have said that's not unusual), but were there any teeth marks/puncture wounds on the body? Lastly, they will undoubtedly check to see if there is an insurance policy on the child. Whichever way this turns out, it's a very tragic situation.

Disney is real nervous about that lake.

There used to be a water park connected with the lake. It was shut down.

There is an island in that lake that used to have a small zoo. There were alligators in the zoo.....big ones. It was shut down.

News reports talked of comparing bite marks with several gators authorities have killed. So, the child had to have bites from the creature.

From the comments here we’ve learned that gators can 1) be hundreds of yards from water 2) move very quickly. The family could have been walking with their son toddling along only to have the gator come out of nowhere.

I can not imagine the horror they are going through now.

Sure, it’s Florida and all but one would think Disney would be vigilant.

As much money as Disney has, i don’t understand why there are alligators in their man made lakes

I work at a power complex and, trust me we don’t want gators, osprey’s, manatees, and eagles on our property. It’s cost a huge amount of money to accommodate them but there is only so much you can do. They are part of our environment and anyone visiting FL should be aware of that.

I don’t get why Gators aren’t shot on sight.

Gators, poisonous snakes, wolves, coyotes, and hawks. Idiot tree huggers have passed laws make it illegal in many states to kill any of these critters despite the fact that they are a constant danger to children, pets, or livestock. I wish we could turn back the clock to the time before the hippies, when most of these were shot on sight. The world was a safer, richer, happier place.
