As Tropical Storm Harvey continues to batter Texas with heavy rains and deep flooding, alligators seeking higher ground have infiltrated at least one neighborhood in a Houston suburb. A woman from Missouri City, southwest of Houston, posted a video on Facebook showing two alligators swimming through her backyard on Sunday. As the water continued to rise around Arlene Gonzalez Kelsch's home, she showed one alligator swimming close to a nearby road while another made its way toward her patio.

Since 1948, there have been more than 275 unprovoked alligator attacks on humans in Florida, of which at least 17 resulted in death. There were only nine fatal attacks in the U.S. throughout the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, but alligators killed 12 people between 2001 and 2007. In May 2006, alligators killed three Floridians in less than a week. Those statistics were the furthest from my mind as I sat cross-legged with my elbows resting on my knees in the bow of a slowly moving jon boat. Trying to paint the gator’s eye with the EOTech MRDS as he floated...
  • Massive Alligators At Kiawah Island Golf Course, South Carolina Caught On Video

Two massive alligators were captured on video Monday strolling along the golf courses on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. A third was photographed sneaking up on golfers during a fund raising tournament Tuesday, though it’s unclear if it was the same animal as the day before. “It was literally a dinosaur,” Carrie Moores, who snapped a picture while taking photos during the tournament, told the Post and Courier Tuesday. “People said it was one of the largest ones they had ever seen. Moores’ photo captured the massive alligator ambling along behind unsuspecting golfers. After snapping the photo, she ran to a...

Every golfer needs a putter he can rely on — especially when an alligator decides to play through. “As I was walking about 5 to 6 feet away from the water I heard a splash, and as soon as I heard that splash I knew it was an alligator, and he got me,” Aarts said. The gator grabbed Aarts by his right ankle. He wound up on his back and rolled into the nearby water hazard as they struggled. “I remember having a club in my hand, and as soon as he had me in the water up to my...

In a battle between America’s symbolic bird of prey and Florida man’s nemesis, a Parrish man said not on his watch. A male bald eagle sat at the edge of a pond behind his home in the Copperstone subdivision when the alligator clamped its jaws on the bird Wednesday. “It’s our bald eagle. It’s our treasure,” Anderson, who is also going through chemotherapy, told Fox 13. “It stands for who we are and what we are.” A neighbor called Justin Matthews of Matthews Wildlife Rescue and he arrived clad in a cowboy hat and camouflage cargo shorts. The eagle’s legs...

An alligator in a South Carolina neighborhood has been nicknamed "Rusty" and the "Trump-a-gator" due to its unusual orange color. The alligator, estimated at 4-5 feet long, has become famous on social media after local residents photographed it swimming in the retention ponds at Tanner Plantation in Hanahan. Herpetologist Josh Zalabak offered one possible explanation for the unusual coloring of the reptile. "Algae -- maybe some pollutant in the water, but it's hard to say unless the water is tested," Zalabak told WCBD-TV. Jay Butfiloski, the state Department of Natural Resources' Alligator Program coordinator, said the color is likely tied...

OCHOPEE, Fla. You hear a big splash in Big Cypress, chances are it’s an alligator diving into the swamp, most likely after being startled from a roadside sunbath by an approaching human. But this was one big splash followed by another big splash. And another and another. I stopped my bicycle to see what all the ruckus was about.Right there, just off the edge of Loop Road, no more than 15 feet away, an alligator was rising tail first and belly up over the surface of the water and then plunging back down. It was clear it was moving against its...

Photo from Sumter County Sheriff's Office About 6:30 p.m. on June 21, 2016, a 8.5-9 foot, 300 lb alligator was discovered near some agitated horses that belonged to Reginald Blanton, 74 years old. Blanton shot the reptile with a 9mm handgun, reportedly hitting it two or three times.  Where he hit it is not clear, but the shots would likely have been  mortal, because the alligator was still there, lying in the grass, when the authorities "euthanized it". While the story is two months old, there are important lessons to learn. After the shots, Blanton's stepson, Jack Hildreth, 58,...

The admonitions were in emails from employees at Reedy Creek Emergency Services. Reedy Creek is the Disney-controlled taxing district that provides government services to the theme parks and surrounding areas. The emails were obtained through a public-records request made after an alligator snatched 2-year-old Lane Graves from the shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon on June 14 and drowned him while he was on vacation with family from Nebraska. The attack took place at Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. After that, many tourists came forward with their own stories of alligator sightings at Disney. One employee at the resort said...
