It’s a difficult snare to avoid sometimes. It is the ingrained fallen human habit. I have more than you do, or I am smarter than you are, I am more famous than you are, etc. etc. When having possessions or intelligence or fame are good things, but can be misused to glorify oneself which shuts the glorification of God out of the soul. So those who are blessed the most often do not cut notable figures in the world.

The narcissism of preening in the mirror and believing that one’s “conscience” is superior to others, without regard to actual facts and outcomes.
FEEL better about one’s beliefs and don’t worry about consistency or rigor.
And that's what allows them to demonize, and eventually dehumanize, those with whom they disagree.
And that's led to most of the greatest mass-murdering, genocidal governments every on the planet.
