During a discouraging time in my engagement to my now wife, my Dad said “Take her out and dream a little.” Nearly 28 years of marriage later to a most wonderful wife, I’m experiencing my first Father’s Day without him.

Yesterday I was fixing my daughter’s brakes and looked at my son who was helping. 40 years ago, I was helping my Dad. We can’t replace him, only carry on memories and honor his good name.

Thanks Dad. Love you.

Situational awareness and to always keep fighting. Is that one or two things? :)

When I was out of work and unable to make my truck payment, my dad gave me the name of a horse to put my last $150 on. It was a real Hallmark moment.

LOL!

When you walk into a bar, pick a table close to the exit with your back at the wall.

Don’t be “Half-A-Job-Harrigan”.

Finish what you start.

No such thing as a free lunch. (Oft mentioned in this thread)
Nice guys finish last.
Who’s the dame? (First question about any old movie)
You can always trust a man who likes baseball.
Don’t be an omadhaun.
“Inhale/exhale, wait for payday”. (When I got my first menial job.)
Treat a lady like a lady, and a whore like a whore, and never confuse the two.
“Who’s blocking my light? Don’t block my light.”
“Where is that damn draft (breeze) coming from?!”
“The pedestrian always has the right-of-way. Cars were allowed on the road as a courtesy.”
To him, every other driver on the road was “Jack”. “C’mon! Speed it up, Jack!”
“You can learn something from anybody.”
“Stand straighter!” “Sit straighter!” “Keep your elbows off of the table!”

My Dad told me when I began college, “Go party day and night, but don't call me from jail. I am not coming to get you. You are on your own.” I believed him. :~/

A pearl or two from my dear departed Dad.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

New and improved usually ain’t.

Don’t ever start a fight, but if you have to, fight like your life depends on it.

Oxen were replaced by horses, horses were replaced by tractors, someday tractors will be replaced by something.
Don’t be afraid of change just because it’s change.

The Bible says that to everything there is a season.
Just be smart enough to know which season it is.

Said while he was teaching me to plow with a team of horses: marriage is a lot like a team of horses. A good team works together, in step and pulling together towards a common goal. That’s a good marriage.

A bad team has one pulling faster or slower than the other, or pulling to one side or another, never in step. That wears both horses out with less work done.
That’s a bad marriage.

Several things my dad has told me:
1. Don’t dip your pen in company ink.
2. Sex is neither a pain in the neck nor a pain in the a$$, if it is you’re doing it wrong and we’ll need to talk.
3. Never give up your bed.
4. Make the first shot count.
5. Never ever forget Our Father, He is first and last. He will take care of everything in between.

My dad is now facing cancer for the second time in ten years & he called me this morning wishing me a Happy Fathers day... Thanks for everything dad....

1. Never take a girl to bed that you aren’t willing to marry. (Yes, some will try to trap you!)

2. Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. (New England classic.)

3. Never throw the first punch but make damn sure you land the last one.

I told my kids:
Never, ever call me for bail money, because you will waste your phone call.
During a job interview, tell them I know how to mop, I know how to clean a toilet, and I know who the boss is and it ain’t me, no matter if its McDonald’s or corporate job.
