Failed: GOP proposal that would have kept Harriet Tubman off $20 bill

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Steve King introduced an amendment in Congress that would have prevented Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and supporter of women's suffrage, from replacing President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

However, the House Rules Committee agreed Tuesday night to deny floor consideration of proposal, which would have prevented the Treasury Department from spending money to redesign paper currency or coins.

The Iowan Republican's amendment, which was first reported by the Huffington Post, would scrap the federal government's plans to replace Jackson on the $20 bill with a picture of Tubman, a black woman who was born in to slavery in 1822 and later escaped. She subsequently made repeated missions on the Underground Railroad to rescue black people from slavery. During the Civil War, she served as a Union Army scout and spy.

"It's not about Harriet Tubman, it's about keeping the picture on the $20," King said Tuesday night, according to Politico, pulling a $20 bill from his pocket and pointing at President Andrew Jackson. "Y'know? Why would you want to change that? I am a conservative, I like to keep what we have."

Politico quoted King as saying it is "racist" and "sexist" to say a woman or person of color should be added to currency.

"Here's what's really happening, this is liberal activism on the part of the president, that's trying to identify people by categories and he's divided us on the lines of groups. … This is a divisive proposal on the part of the president and mine's unifying. It says just don't change anything."

You are 100% correct. Thanks for adding some good, old fashioned common sense to this thread.

She’s a ridiculous choice to be on currency.

Both Jackson and Polk were great Presidents and you Sir know nothing about history.

There seems to be two histories and I doubt either of them is true. After WW II the Russians set about rewriting their histories and as a 10 year old I wondered if that could happen here, I decide it could and it appears I was right.

Old Hickory did well in the Battle of New Orleans for us. “In 1814, we took a little trip....”

Polk? Gave us 54 40 or fight, resolved, IIRC, by JQ Adams peacefully. The British and American camps up there in the San Juans are tidy little pieces of gold in the waters off the Juan de Fuca strait.

You know this.

I understand Jackson was actually quite the DC insider. I don’t know about Polk.

You know this.

I know that I once was poor but free, now not so much.

I know that we are lied to by the best propagandists money can buy.

I forgot that I also know that the Battle of New Orleans was fought after the surrender. No iPhones back then.

Give it time and George Washington and Thomas Jefferson will be vilified and removed from our currency.

Boy, now THAT’s a true statement.

Part of me has decided that because I have known freedom, I will die free. Liberty creates a thirst for it. No one will take that from me, ultimately, even though they may try to take my soul.

Really!

I didn’t know that, but it makes sense.

Never been to NOLA. Have been to both the American and British camps in WA State. I recall the little buildings and a whole raft of wild turkeys. Apparently, the whole dust up started over some Ole’ Boy’s pig.

Harriet Tubman was a gun-toting Republican.

And anti-slavery. Which is anti-Muslim.

Harriet Tubman was a criminal, a felon

From the British point of view so were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

She supported the terrorist and murderer John Brown. Having her on our currency notes is almost as disgraceful as if they put Brown.

In fact, even if you admire Tubman (as I've asked about a thousand times), can anyone really say with a straight face that Harriet Tubman is such an important historical figure that she deserves to be on our currency? James Madison was the principal author of the Constitution. Other than political correctness, what could possibly justify putting Tubman on the $20 when Madison has no place on our currency (at least not any of the ones in wide circulation - I'm not counting dollar coins which have portraits of virtually every past President).

I disagree. Harriet was as much a rebel for a just cause as were many of our nation’s founders.

This is an example of the sort of symbolism that is counterproductive for the GOP to fight.

There’s plenty of more substantial stuff for us to focus on.

The Left understands the power of symbolism to change people's thought patterns. They're using this particular symbol as to reinforce their "Dead White Males = EVIL, 'Minorities' = RIGHTEOUS" meme. Who appears on the $20 may in itself be trivial, but the agenda behind it is not.

It's the same issue that I had with the push by liberals (and establishment Republicans) to remove Confederate Flags and memorials. Even if you have no particular sympathy for Neo-Confedrates, the symbolism of the act is about the PC Left's power over how Americans choose to remember their heritage and history.

The people who pushed replacing Jackson with Tubman also want to replace Washington with Malcolm X. Those who want to tear down the Confederate Flag also want to burn the American flag. They just aren't there yet, there would be more resistance to defiling Washington's memory than Jackson's or Robert E. Lee's. They go after the easier targets first, and count on reactions like yours to make sure the PC Left ratchets forward, slowly but surely.

DWEMs are still all over the rest of the money we have.

I am okay with the symbolism that allows someone other than DWEMs to be honored here and there.

It was Congress who put them all over our money, and I’m okay with our more or less democratically-elected Congress tweaking it here or there.
