I like seeing Merkel going over the falls. She must be totally insane, uh, I mean, paid off.

Possible. I think the push-back is on.

I’ve seen people change on a dime on political issues. That said, I’m not positive about Boris.

Y'know, I seem to recall a drive in the UK to ban Donald Trump from visiting -- and it failed, and just to stick a finger in the eye, DT was in pro-Remain Scotland on the day of the Brexit vote. Heh.

Oh man, I’ve got to eat crow on that one, he did essentially say what you said he did.

I completely missed that when I watched it live.

As a fellow balding eagle, I have enjoyed crow many times. I thought it was a master stroke laying this at Obama's feet, along with mentioning that the boy king from Kenya is embarassed.

I still remember the early days of the Obama reign, when the media were scared spitless (that's with a 'p' for the mods) to criticize him--now it's open season.

>> No. it is how their system works. Basically BREXIT was a no confidence vote in the current UK Gub'ment leadership because they all wanted to stay in the EU. Cameron announces he is stepping down so the process of forming a new government can start. UKIP will now seek to from a new government <<

That's not how their system works at all. The BREXIT vote had absolutely nothing to do with which party controls government. The ruling Conservative Party was "neutral" on the issue and most of the Conservative MPs OPPOSED the status quo with the EU. Cameron being an EU bootlicker was his personal belief and UK citizens voting to leave was a slap in the face to HIM, personally.

Cameron stepped down because he is a laughing stock after losing to Nigel Farage on this issue (if the UK were like the USA, he'd just dig his heels in and ignore the fact that the voters just slammed him down hard), and he doesn't want to drag his party down with him by staying as the face of the party thru the next election cycle.

UKIP has precisely ZERO seats in the House of Commons and thus could never "form a government" under the UK's parliamentary system. More likely, their victory on this issue will force the other three parties to tilt to the right on EU issues. A similar thing happened in the USA when Prohibition was passed despite the Prohibition Party being a minor third party with only 2% of the vote. The issue they pushed hard for was no longer on the table, so they really had nothing to campaign on until Prohibition was repealed in 1933. The United States banning booze didn't result in the next President coming from the Prohibition Party.

Yeah there’s not gonna be a new election, the next one is scheduled for 2020 and that’s probably when it will be.

All that’s gonna happen is the Conservatives are gonna elect a new leader who will become PM. Cameron’s cabinet is overwhelming pro-EU but and I believe the majority of Tory MPs declared for “remain” (185 to 138 according to one article) but the majority of Tory voters are for leaving. The next PM is highly likely to be anti-EU, Tory party members make the choice after the MPs narrow the candidates down to 2.

Navigating the exit is now the primary task for their government for the rest of the term. I think Cameron doesn’t want it on him if it doesn’t go smoothly and that’s why he quit. “Screw you guys, I’m going home”. Parliamentary systems are much more given to leaders quitting. I never expected him to quit though. When MPs get involved in scandals they sorta get kicked out of their party too, imagine that in our Congress.

As far as UKIP, they achieved their reason for being, but I can’t imagine their future electoral prospects bode well. Farange made a bizarre comment “maybe we’ll become the new Labour party” which, ew. For their part the Labour Party appears lost and confused. An aside, a poll of how members of each party felt about the EU show that something like 20% of UKIP voters actually wanted to stay, meaning they were in the party for some other reason.

They do have ONE MP actually. Douglas Carswell. He called for UKIP to have a new leader a while back which caused Farange to threaten him or something.

I think you're probably right. This was a tremendous upset for Farage and the highlight of his political career, but ironically, I think it will be downhill from here. The UKIP presented a good alternate to the CINOs in the Conservative Party because they didn't cave to the left, but their Achilles heel is they were always a "single issue" party and now that the issue is off the table, they have nothing to campaign on.

Farage tried in vain to get elected to House of Commons several times. The one elected office he DID win was as a MP in the European Parliment, so ironically, he just abolished his sole political power in government.

Apparently he also made some ridiculous campaign promises before the EU vote, like telling voters there would be "£350 million more funding for the NHS if we leave the EU" or something bizarre along those lines. The lefties on the internet are having a field day blasting for him and of course Farage has now said he "regrets" that promise. Sad that a staunch conservative on our side would try to appeal to the "gimme free stuff" electorate.

Regarding Douglas Carswell, I was surprised since I thought the UKIP didn't win a single contested election for the House of Commons. Turned out I was right -- Carswell was elected as the Conservative Party's nominee and then switched to the UKIP after he was in office. Maybe he'll pull a Bob Smith over there (Bob Smith, U.S. Senator from NH, announced he was leaving the GOP for the Constitution Party, then came crawling back to the GOP when they promised him a cushy committee chairmanship)

My gut feeling THIS time around is that the Conservative Party WILL ultimately replace Cameron with someone who was on the winning side of the BREXIT vote, but a center-right squish who was been more "reserved" on the issue in public and didn't vehemently blast the EU in speeches or campaign hard for the exit. That way they won't "offend" anyone during the negotiations. Barf.

Of course, in an ideal world, the Conservative Party would replace Cameron with an actual conservative. Someone like Peter Bone would be the British equivalent to our Ted Cruz's and Mike Lee's in the Senate.

Carswell was reelected in 2015 under the UKIP banner. Another party switcher, Mark Reckless, was defeated. Each of them had resigned and won a special election after switching parties, ala Phil Gramm in in 1983. So UKIP has won a total of 3 elections to the House of Commons, only 1 at a general election.

Faragne was narrowly defeated in 2015, ironically the Tory that beat him was a former UKIP member.

In 2010 he ran against the Speaker of the House of Commons, incumbent Speakers run for reelection without party and usually are not opposed by the major parties. He placed third in that race.

He seems like a personality cult type dude. I would agree with Carswell that they could have used a new leader, but what do I know.

I wholeheartedly agree — UKIP has accomplished its major goal, or rather has all but accomplished it, and a year ago I didn’t think Brexit was going to happen. Bravo, voters of Britain! Farage and his party nabbed seats in that rubber-stamp Euro parliament, but those will eventually be vacated, and I suspect the powers that run things will send them home. They’d already been marginalized in the EU parliament.

I don’t think I’d count out Farage and UKIP just yet, and that’s a sea change for yours truly. It’s not unlikely that UKIP will nab Tory seats, and probably some Labour seats as well; the Tories will make inroads on Labour, and the pro-Brexit elements of Labour will wind up making their own exit from Labour if Labour keeps doubling down, as it did with its consecutive leadership choices of Milleband and Corbyn.

SNP basically pushed Labour to near-extinction in Scotland in the last election, and loss of those seats in Scotland marginalized the Labour party in the UK as a whole.

Cameron has been wildly successful as PM, but the way he got there hasn’t been endearing to me, and probably to most of us here. Imagine — he led the country during the unsuccessful Scottish independence vote, then led the Tories to an outright majority (in large part thanks to the failure of the Scottish ind. vote), pushed Labour to the outskirts of power, and basically finished off the LD. All of that actually set the stage for the success of Brexit, and his posturing (that’s what I believe it was) regarding that probably seemed like a safe bet if the polls were correct.

Turned out the polls appear to have been cooked the whole time. That left him with one honorable option. Now he’ll have more time to hang out with Jeremy.
