Triumph for 'Brexiteer' Nigel Farage, British scourge of the EU

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's vote to leave the European Union is a triumph for Nigel Farage, the abrasive anti-immigration politician who tapped into a deep well of popular anger that rivals failed to understand.

On a night that seemed to start badly for the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), with the last opinion polls predicting defeat for the Leave camp in Thursday's referendum, Farage said at first it looked like Remain would win.

But it ended with victory for him and on Friday morning he declared jubilantly that the vote for a British exit from the EU, or Brexit, heralded a new dawn for the nation.

"The EU is failing, the EU is dying. I hope we've knocked the first brick out of the wall. I hope this is the first step towards a Europe of sovereign nation states," he said, predicting that the Netherlands and Denmark would go next.

Not for the first time causing outrage, he said the result had been achieved "without a single bullet being fired".

The comment drew accusations of insensitivity after the killing of pro-EU lawmaker Jo Cox last week, after which a man charged with her murder told a court his name was "death to traitors, freedom for Britain".

But with his blunt approach, Farage has finally achieved the goal he has pursued relentlessly in his 25 years in politics.

Ugh - this canard doesn't work.

A 1930/40s war time Democrat was nowhere near a modern day Democrat.

Just as Trump is nowhere near Reagan.

There you go. Hitler’s threat was obvious. EU’s bureaucratic totalitarianism is more insidious. Europe freedom. The Brits, the Vikings, and the Swiss.

Did he also say he identified more with the Democrats on social issues and was he not registered as one and has he not donated to them to promote his own wealth?

Joe Lieberman said all the right things on terrorism. Doesn't make him a Conservative.

I'm voting for him, but please dispense with the nonsense that the world is following his lead. Farage was fighting this fight when Trump was moving from Democrat to Independent to Reform to whatever worked for him at the time.

So party label transcends a patriotic, nationalistic love of country/countrymen? A person can’t champion the cause of making decisions that benefit America First unless they’ve always had the right party label?

There are videos of Trump from the eighties making the patriotic case for governing America via making policies that benefit America first and foremost. The eighties.

Just as there are videos of him saying he's for abortion and wouldn't do anything to stop partial birth.

OK - we'll toss that aside since he's come around.

Affirmative action? For it. Comments dismissing Scalia’s rebuttal without reading it. Patriotic?

Assault weapons ban? Now he's a huge gun guy.

Look, we can go back and forth all day. He's not the Savior and his ideas are not original, some are not even his.

Maybe he's the man for this time. Maybe not. We'll see. But he's no Conservative and he's definitely no Reagan.

Bull. Henry Wallace was cut from the same cloth as Bernie Sanders. Bernie just plays the moderate communist card a little more for the media.

You can pick communist sympathizes from every generation.

Doesn't mean that Trump can be compared to Reagan simply because both were registered Democrats.

That's the angle here. Not that every single one is a mutually exclusive case.

You made a broad brush statement. I offered an example that proved you wrong. The New Deal crowd was a coalition of Socialists, Communists, Populists, and Racists. If anything, there are fewer Communists and Populists in the Democrat party today, but it is still full of Socialists and Racists.

The EU leadership has already announced that the UK should take steps to leave as soon as possible. They are terrified others will leave as well.

My how President Trump looked Presidential from the International stage....leaving Hillary and Obozo looking like dumb and dumber. I wonder if Obummer/Hillary were sleeping in on the floor of the House - total inconsequential losers.

And I paint in broad strokes........you are trying to compare two different times in world history by saying all Democrats that were for the New Deal were all in this nefarious camp, which I’m sure encapsulates some of them.

At the same time it was most of that party favored the Lend Lease program....a move that would not be correlated with today’s bunch.

Again, Reagan being a Democrat in 1930-40 is not the same as Trump being a Democrat in 2004. Nor were the impetuses for each man to leave that party.

Reagan left the Democrat party on principle. Trump left it to find a way to run for higher office, eventually rotating between Independent and Republican. BUT first, left the Republican party because he identified more with Democrats.
