House Republicans pushing gun control bill

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) is spearheading gun control legislation that would keep firearms out of the hands of suspected terrorists, but it is unclear whether Republican leadership will give the bill a vote.

The Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act announced Friday will serve as a companion bill to the compromise gun legislation introduced by Susan Collins (R-Maine) in the Senate.

The gun legislation would prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms.

The bipartisan legislation appears to have Democratic support and is backed by a handful of Republicans, including Reps. Bob Dold (Ill.), Scott Rigell (Va.), Peter King (N.Y.) and Curbelo.

“Some of our colleagues say this is all about terrorism,” Curbelo told reporters at a Friday press conference. "Others say this is all about guns. We are coming together to say this is about keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous terrorists."

The bill comes after House Democrats this week staged a sit-in in an attempt to force a vote on gun control legislation.

Under Curbelo’s bill, the attorney general would be empowered to block roughly 3,000 suspected terrorists who are on the no-fly list or selectee list from purchasing firearms, lawmakers said.

The legislation would also include provisions to swiftly remove people who are wrongly placed on the no-fly list and recoup the legal costs they spent defending their Second Amendment rights.

Curbelo spoke with House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) chief of staff about the legislation earlier in the week, while Rigell, who is also backing the bill, plans to meet with the Speaker’s office today.

Background checks would keep firearms out of the hands of suspected terrorists if Obama and his Admin would hit the road

[RINOs Rep. Carlos Curbelo, Dold, Riggel and Peter King are jumping on the gungrabber bandwagon, not surprised at all about King. ]

They know their time is short before TRUMP gets in office.

“Suspected” being the key word there. I guess some Republicans care as little about due process as the Dems.

One worries (but does not know for sure) that a possible Dem plan might be to use the fly list as a foot-in-door to make gun ownership control extra-constitutional, then to label political enemies as potential bad guys. One would love to be wrong on this worry.

That will not happen and you know it. Banning guns is not what they are after. What they are after is the disarming of law abiding citizens. Making them helpless and unable to defend themselves from those who wish to enslave and harm them. Most about 99 and 99/100ths percent know this, they just do not want to acknowledge it.

Traitors one and all.

If someone is on a watchlist, why can they be my neighbor?

And hope that your name isn’t Robert Johnson. I read an article that over 80 “Robert Johnsons” had been stopped as their name was on the no-fly list.

Now, it may have been they checked the ID and they were allowed on when their middle name was “Frank” and not “Muhammed”. Or - maybe they missed their flight, were interogated, etc.

-- You do understand that now is the time to stop it. When it gets to the "We will not comply" , it is going to end in blood being shed. Do you understand this? Does everyone else? --

It is prudent to outline the downside risk, to the proponents of legislation. You bring up a good point, the downside risk is substantial.

If after being apprised of the state of will of its opponents, the government decides to "push it," we all find out if the prediction of blood shed (which should be a strong deterrent to passing objectionable law) was accurate, or bluster.

At any rate, I think everybody understands. The government just disagrees that "now is the time to stop it."

"You do understand that now is the time to stop it."

I fear the courts and legislators have mainly sold us out - they see the end game nearing and are trying to endear themselves with the ruling elite.

There is always hope, but also a time to be realistic about that hope.

This is just another pandering RINO-POS trying to make the emotional gun-grab politics of the moment a plus for himself.

If this was really about terror, they would be looking to pass a life-sentence, no parole law for TERRORISTS that use guns as well as EXPLOSIVES. But we don’t hear anything about exlosives, do we??? It is all about gun grabbing and control -— Washington is TOTALLY out of control and we need real STRONG leadership to knock this kind of crap down.

The three branches of government need to agree on a method agreeing with the intentions of the Constitution and its Bill of Rights to recognize behavior that identifies terroristic acts before they escalate to injury or death, assign it to unwanted and impermissible, to neutralize such individuals exhibiting such behavior, and imprison or deport these individuals without delay.

One of the impermissible behaviors would be misplaced compassion that results in enabling terroristic acts. Don't focus on the common tools employed by miscreants, focus on the malefactors themselves and neuter them. Leave the tools (hammers, pressure cookers, mining explosives, knives, firearms) alone, any of which should be available for use by the general adult citizenry.

Do not undermine the Second Amendment which makes the other Amendments possible.
