A question that just occurred to me was, with the UK out of the EU, what will be the EU's lingua franca for conducting business? A quick search turned up the article above, along with a few others.

It’ll be German. The French ran out of money and the Germans are in the ascendancy there.

English is the de facto language of international business. Brexit won’t change that.

I think the French may be missing the more important issues.

That’s just politics. Ireland is still in the EU and Scotland may join it, so English will still be an official language, though its status may sink a little at EU HQ.

Yet another thing over which the EU squabblers can argue.

French? German? Esperanto? Chinese?

Want to be a commercial pilot?

You MUST speak English.

Want to be a Formula 1 Driver/Principal/Engineer/Mechanic?

You MUST speak English.

Want to regulate the EU?

TBD...

Sometimes the French amaze me. They really live in their own bubble!

Some years ago I was involved with safety testing some new French artillery rounds that we were looking to buy for US use. At a point in the documentation, we asked them what the composition of the explosive fill was and the company rep said “TNT”.

I asked what per cent additives they used - we add some aluminum powder for brissance and wax for stability - and he said somewhat haughtily “only you Anglo-Saxons adulterated your TNT”.

Wow. They really do have insecurity issues, don’t they?

Several tweeters asked Mr Menard and Mr Melenchon what the majority English speaking Irish would do, should English disappear.

Too bad, Mr Menard implied, pointing out that Ireland’s first language was officially Gaelic.

In the same room, which language would a Frenchman, a Spaniard, a German and an Italian speak?

English is the international language of business and is the second language of everyone on the Continent. So, naturally the French want to get rid of it.

A good rule of thumb is that if the French think something is a good idea, it isn't.

The only problem with using French as the deFacto language is that they have a different word for everything
