Rio de Janeiro police officers are warning tourists that theyre on their own this summer as the Brazilian city struggles to cope with rising violent crime ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.
About 100 Rio state police officers protested last week in the arrivals hall of Rios main international airport holding banners that read Welcome to Hell, Agence France-Presse reported.
Police and firefighters dont get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe, the sign said, CNN reported.
We are here to show citizens and tourists from abroad the realities of Brazil, said veteran police Officer Alexander Neto, 56. Theyve been conned and we, too, have been conned. You have to understand there is no public security.

Why couldn’t Washington D.C. get the Olympics?
Maybe the place would get destroyed.
Go to Rio, get your passport stolen, along with thousands of others , then have fun getting home. No thanks
Heck, Washington is probably more dangerous than Rio.
The Atlanta olympics was a good excuse to raze all the crap between downtown and GA Tech. It is all very nice now.
I think DC will destroy itself on it's own.
That’s pretty much how Rio always is.
these Olympics could be a terrible event for Brazil. Stay tuned.
I was in Rio a long time ago. It seems that nothing has changed!!!!
When I was in Rio, it was for work, and I was the project head. We had good Brazilian team members, who kept us out of trouble. We also had good advice, which kept our passports safe, kept us out of the hands of bandits and kidnappers, and minimized the effects of the inevitable dysentery.
So our trip to Brazil turned into a wonderful adventure!
2016 tourists going to Rio without our advantages may not have such a great experience. You can at least use the Internet to get some good advice. Forewarned is forearmed!!!!
I attended a professional conference last week and sat in on a session by a travel medicine specialist. She preps people for travel to all sorts of hell holes.
When is comes to Rio she is discouraging her patients from going during the Olympics.
1. Civil unrest
2. Zika
3. Lack of infrastructure
4. Inadequate public health measures (sewers, potable water)
but if you want to pay some protection money then we could have a deal
You know what’s fun? Going on YouTube and viewing people getting shot and killed in Brazil.
There’s a lot of material there.
A haiku:
Have you tried Liveleak.com?
Yes, it’s depressing. There are millions of folks willing to murder for someone else’s scooter in Brazil, it seems.
I have a relative that had a very good chance of medaling in the woman’s discus (currantly has the US record) she injured herself training and has decided not to compete this time. She doesn’t seem that upset about it. I wonder if the athletes have decided this one is going to be a farce.
