Tesla Model X crashes and rolls in Autopilot mode

A second Tesla has crashed in Autopilot mode, though there were no fatalities this time.

The accident took place about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The police report notes that a Model X was traveling east with two passengers on board when it crashed into a guard rail on the right side of the road. The force of the impact caused it to collide with the concrete median, and sent it across the eastbound lanes. It then rolled, and came to a stop on its roof in the middle of the road.

Luckily, the two passengers walked away without major injuries. The driver, Albert Scaglione, told the police officers who arrived at the scene of the accident that Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash.

It’s one thing to be Microsoft’s unwitting software beta tester. Quite another apparently to be Tesla’s.

Got to give Google credit for one thing. They put well-trained drivers with spotless driving records in the front seats of their self-driving test vehicles. If necessary, they take control of the car. Every little fender bender (nearly all of which are the other driver's fault) has to be documented for DMV.

Spending so much money on a Tesla, only to become a tester of their autopilot system, is a disaster waiting to happen. Tesla may have some control of their software, but they don't have control of the owners of these vehicles. Why the government has allowed this why requiring Google to adhere to some pretty rigid rules should probably be looked at.

Both of my newer cellphones (heavily-discounted at Christmas last year when I had a little tax refund money left over) basically require Google to use their full capacity.

It surprised me on the Tracfone, especially.

It sounds like Tesla Autopilot Mode is vulnerable to the Geico Squirrels.

What’s going on with the drivers? Are they simply not paying attention to the road? Why don’t they turn the wheel, or step on the brake?

It’s time to stop calling it an “autopilot”. It’s not. At best, it is an advanced cruise control.

It still requires the driver to stay alert and ready to grab control at any instant.

So let me get this straight. These experimental cars, clearly with at least a few bugs to work out, are cruising down the same roads and streets as regular traffic. In other words, like lab rats the regular driving public is part of the experiment. I’d hate to be the insurance company that’s underwritten liability for Tesla.

What’s going on with the drivers?

Not sure, since I don't own or plan to buy a self driving car in the near future.

Id blame the auto pilot for the wreck to. I wonder how the insurance company handles fault at that point.

I test drove a Tesla. It has very fast acceleration, because its direct power to the wheel and no transmission. But it is also lacking, imo, for a car at this price. Someone very close to me has a fairly new BMW 750 which I have also driven. There is no comparison as far as driving, comfort, response etc. IMO the Tesla is not a luxury car, and the BMW is a far superior car all told. Same price, basically.

One of the “must-be’s” is to eliminate all private transportation. One good way to accomplish that goal is to give computers the task and remove people from the equation. The people will love this because it means more quality time with their smart phones and tablets. Jihadis will love it for its remote bomb delivery capabilities. And yes, all new cars are lojacked and tracked. That is why if you request a brand new car to be bare bones it will still have the antenna. Get smart, and drive old.

Tesla could very well have a huge legal problem on their hands.

They are effectively selling a “self-driving” car before all of the legal and regulatory issues are dealt with.

I suspect the NHTSA is going to come down hard on Tesla before long.

Tesla doesn’t come close to having the resources needed to develop the software needed for a reliable self-driving car, if that’s even possible. Google and Apple, at least do.

“Uhhh....no he wasn’t, supposedly.....”

No doubt the Mosk people are looking into that angle. Anything to blame the driver...or his ‘associates’.
