Minn. cop fatally shoots black man during traffic stop, aftermath broadcast on Facebook

A Minnesota traffic stop turned deadly Wednesday evening as a police officer opened fire on a black driver.

The victim, 32-year-old Philando Castile, died at a Minneapolis hospital, a family member told The Washington Post. Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, told CBS Minnesota that her son had died at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The St. Anthony Police Department confirmed the driver’s death during a brief Thursday morning press conference but did not identify the officer involved in the shooting or the officer’s race.

The bloody aftermath of the confrontation was broadcast live on Facebook by a female passenger in the car.

“He killed my boyfriend,” said the woman, whose Facebook page named her as Lavish Reynolds, as blood soaked through Castile’s shirt.

In the video, Reynolds says Castile was legally licensed to carry a firearm and was reaching for his identification when the officer opened fire.

“He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm,” she says.

“I have a CCW. I keep my hands on the wheel, announce that I have a CCW, announce that I have a weapon on my left hip. I do not move until told to do so.”

If I were carrying a CONCEALED weapon, the last thing I would tell a cop is “I have a gun”. Concealed means concealed, not all states require notification, and for good reason. This guy would be alive today if he had kept his mouth shut.

On the surface, it does not look like a good shoot.
But it is way too early in the investigation for any conclusion.
Another case where a body camera might just give the true answer.

:) Some people can’t accept that there are good black kids out there.

There’s a lot of bad ones, I KNOW, but when I was in the hospital some years back, the CNAs making 15 an hour were GREAT to me. Patient as heck. All black.

There are whites shot dead by cops too, and some of those were unjust. The diference is that we know a couple hundred shootings and couple of bad ones HAVE TO happen in a country of 350 million.

As awful as that sounds. It’s the odds. Bad apples are gonna happen.

These people are out of control. This bastard gets leave time, an innocent black guy is dead, and rioters will retaliate against business owners and innocent white people. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY TEACHING THESE KNUCKLEHEADS IN THE ACADEMIES?????

We need civilian Directors of Law and Public Safety who answer to elected officials, not untouchable police chiefs who answer only to themselves and have connections to the people they supervise.

We need residency requirements whereby cops have to live in the jurisdiction where they serve.

We need civilian review boards which can remove rogue cops when officials fail to do so.

We need law enforcement establishments which reflect the community in which they serve.

We need civilian observers in every class room in every police academy in the country to see what the hell these people are being taught.

We need to remove cops who, in effect, stage job actions by refusing to act if they don’t like the way officials respond to their actions.

If you are white, as am I, the next time one of these knuckleheads act out, you or your family could be the next target.

They are law enforcement personnel, not a military force of occupation in a hostile country.

This source disagrees...it says two traffic violations, one “driving w/o a license”, and 1 “lapsed insurance” is his only record: http://heavy.com/news/2016/07/philando-castile-falcon-heights-minnesota-police-shooting-facebook-live-video-watch-uncensored-you-tube-police-shooting-man-shot-lavish-reynolds/

The area is middle-class enough (low crime rate) that no one can remember the last officer-involved shooting around there.

Like most of the Twin Cities, the actual bad apples are transplants from elsewhere lured by generous welfare benefits.

If you are a Police officer in Memphis, most are black, that is the way they want it. Reverse Racism. When the few white officers score higher on a higher rank test they won’t pass the any one. And they’ve gone to a number system where race is not known supposedly. Took a friend several years to make Major, when he scored the highest on the testing, had to join a discrimination lawsuit to make a higher rank. Plus you have to live in Memphis, not just in the County. Half the black population has been in prison. Down 400 officers, and more leaving no one wants to live in Memphis. Memphis is LIBTARD owned and run.

“than some “hero” roadside tax collector with a twitchy trigger finger.”

Wow. Do you have a lot of problems with confrontations with law enforcement?

There was dash cam video of the whole thing in that case.

Didn’t the cop go to jail for that?

Search on police training videos. You will see police training is, in reality, military combat training. They are trained to immediately escalate the situation if any threat is detected, and their gun is their “first responder”.

I have watched some of these videos, and it is chilling to see what our civilian police have been transformed to.

Uh....yeah. You don’t know anything about his girlfriend now do you? Why didn’t he keep his hands up, tell the officer that his ID was in his pocket and wait for instructions?

I dont know. He said he had a gun and said he was getting his license.

But the cop didn’t know that. The guy wasn’t thinking which is very possible in the moment (the victim)

Couldn’t the cop have grabbed his arm quickly instead? Would still have time to shoot if the guy wrested free and went for his gun.

I dont know.

My friends from 25 years ago would have just punched him out :)

That is exactly the right way to handle it, and I’m sure the cops appreciate it.

I do not trust the girlfriend’s statement on what happened before the video. I am also not confident that the cop’s statement will be accurate. I think it is almost certain that one or both of the cop and the dead guy did something stupid, and both sides want to hide part of the story. I hope the cop had audio and video enabled.

“This guy would be alive today if he had kept his mouth shut.”

Unless the cop saw it when the guy was reaching for ID. If the hand is near the weapon there’s not much time left. Better to have your hands in plain sight and let the cop know.

In NC, if you encounter a law enforcement officer and do not advise him you are carrying a weapon, it is a FELONY. Furthermore, cops don't like surprises.

The process is: First announce you have a CCW, THEN state the nature of the weapon.
