I had a friend in radio, music director, and she played Jimmy Webb’s album, I think it was called “Mirage,” over and over and over and over. I didn’t really like it much, but after the thousandth time I heard it I finally got it and it became a favorite album of mine.
This song, “The Highwayman,” was on that album. To this day I think he sings it best. Here’s a live version:
