India Complains About Mig-29K/KUB Performance

MOSCOW --- India reports several troubles with the performance and maintenance of its MiG-29K/KUB (NATO reporting name: Fulcrum-F) naval multirole fighters, as well as with Vikramaditya (former "Admiral Gorshkov"/Kiev-class) aircraft carrier.

The fighters built by Russia’s RSK-MiG corporation (a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation, Russian acronym: OAK) come short of Indian Navy`s (IN) requirements, a source in India`s Defense Ministry said.

"Russian MiG-29K/KUB multirole fighter jets could have been delivered to India in a substandard configuration. Several aircraft have been modified and brought up to the required operational level literally at the runways of IN`s airbases. We have several troubles with the integration of foreign-originated electronic components with the aircraft`s avionics suites. Sometimes India has to acquire such elements directly from its overseas partners. IN’s Vikramaditya aircraft carrier also faces with several shortcomings," the source said.

He added that both ship and fighters were to be refined to reach the combat-ready status. "At the same time, Vikramaditya and MiG-29K/KUB fighters have a great potential. These pieces of military equipment have significantly beefed up India`s defensive capacities," the source added.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s (SIPRI) arms transfers database, Russia was to supply 45 MiG-29K/KUB fighter jets (including 8 MiG-29KUB twin-seat operational trainers) to India.

The first batch of 15 aircraft (including 4 MiG-29KUBs) was delivered to New Delhi in 2010-2011. The deliveries of the remaining 29 fighters (including 4 MiG-29KUBs) started in 2012. As of late 2015, 38 MiG-29K/KUB planes were supplied to the customer.

The Vikramaditya aircraft carrier worth USD2.3 billion was delivered to India in 2013.

Tough schittsky, India. You buy from the Yugo factory; you get a Yugo. Guess it never crossed your mind to shop in the U.S.A.

Of course. The Russians refer derisively to any “foreign sales models of Russian military equipment” as selling “Idiot Models.”

Don't blame me this term was originated in the CCP days.

The CCP, ops, sorry, the Russian, equivalent of selling them “Edsels.”

It’s a return to the old Soviet manufacturing techniques and practices used in Russian automobiles.

Don’t know about Apple’s customer care, but with Amazon I’ve got no problem. That ‘mayday’ button on Amazon’s tablet has handled more than a few issues extremely quickly. Pretty much a must, I think, for any heavy customer of Amazon to have one at hand.

I know. I am a heavy prime user but there has never been a human on the other end of any communication about an problem I’ve had. That isn’t to say their service isn’t bad but they go out of their wait to not acquaint you with a human. Just my opinion. Not worth squat really.

Ahem, technically it was “1D10T”. ...

Anyway, iirc the Indians are in the market for foreign aircraft for their home built carrier. Looking at the MiG plus the Rafale and a navalized Gripen (ski jump launch performance is a big unknown on those last two). So this is possibly laying out a foundation for negotiating with the Russians again for more MiGs. Means that the Indians learned their lessons from getting screwed over by the Russians the first time around.

Keep an eye out on Prime Day, if there’s a cheap Amazon tablet with the Mayday button, get one. Good for reading books on, plus you push the button and you’re in voice/video chat with an Amazon customer support person within a minute.

Maybe. If they bought an F/A-18 OK. An F-35 not so much.
