DALLAS (CBSDFW) – “We are all worried for our safety. We are all on edge and being very careful.” said Dallas Polce Chief David Brown at a Monday press conference following the deadly shooting that took the lives of 5 Dallas Police officers Thursday night.

Saying he was “running on fumes,” Brown spoke frankly about everything that his employees have to deal with on a daily basis – and that it can be overwhelming at times. “We’re asking cops to do too much in this country” said Brown.

“Every societal failure, we put it off on the cops to solve” said Brown. He listed mental health, drug addiction, loose dogs, failing schools as problems the public expects ‘cops to solve.’

“Seventy percent of the African American community is being raised by single women, let’s give it to the cops to solve that as well” said Brown. “Policing was never meant to solve all those problems.” When asked what advice he would give black men, Chief Brown said, “Become a part of the solution, serve your community. Don’t be a part of the problem…we’re hiring. Get off that protest line and put an application in. We’ll put you in your neighborhood – we will help you resolve some of the problems you are protesting about.”

I agree with you wholeheartedly. No flames from me.
I hear the refrain, even from Rush this morning ,that we should respect the police. I will show respect to the police when that respect is also shown to me.
I have been involved in incidents with the police in which they should complete disrespect to me and the people I was with. In one incident, I was actually fearful that the police were going to assault my husband. We are both professionals with no criminal record.
My opinion of the policehas been at an all time low for the past 4 years.
I think the police in the past were always hassling the low income , black communities. But then they started targeting everyone. People who live in upper middle class to wealthy neighborhoods. We are all seeing what abuse of police power is like, and we do not like what we see.

Well one task I should be so bold to suggest would be to stop shooting people’s pets as a method of intimidation at a scene. Another would be no more no-knock warrants being carried out at 2:00am.

Any cops who think this need to quit if the job is too much for them.

I don't necessarily disagree. But I would like to hear which laws the Chief would like his officers to either de-emphasize or just ignore.

And I would ask my fellow FReepers the same question.

“At this point the National Guard should be called out.”

In every major city in the US that’s run by gun-hating Democrats having the Guard take over public safety would be a vast improvement.

But I would like to hear which laws the Chief would like his officers to either de-emphasize or just ignore.

Better to ask which laws we would like the relevant legislature or Congress to REPEAL.

Let's start with repealing 'gun laws'. Urban centers with harsh gun laws are safe zones for criminals. Then let's repeal all the gibsmedat programs, that pay people at their neighbors expense to do nothing. Then let's privatize the government schools, and abolish mandatory attendance. Then we won't need "resource officers" to attempt to control the thugs who don't even want to be there.

Stop arresting people for marijuana possession.
Enforcing seat belt laws would be another task they could do away with. Tasks that increase revenue for the cities like seat belt law fines is something they could stop enforcing.

Part of the problem is that there’s so much that’s criminalized now, part of it is that there’s a huge chunk of the mentality that the government needing to control things/everything in our society, too.

I believe the Chief may have been implying that the police can not be imposed upon to carry the load of law enforcement into enforcement concerning societal breakdown, in areas of morality and social justice and family counseling services and psychological interns, and education, and made to assume the roles of pastors and teachers and other professionals.

It is too much. Police are trained basically in areas of legal and physical enforcement of laws. Period.

Blaming cops for utilizing this training and then blaming them for not doing more first, can cost officers their lives.

This is what is happening, we all know it and it is too much.

The legislatures should protect them and confine their responsibilities to law enforcement and release them to do their jobs with cameras to protect them and vouch for the quality of the job they are doing, and just back off from harassing them, by entertaining every committee that wants to bitch against the police force.

Democrats have the blacks on a plantation, kept jobless, in order to get re-elected, keeping black schools in shambles and allowing thugs and criminals to roam the halls.

Cops will simply cease going into these bad neighborhoods if the state wants to allow these neighborhoods to fail and to turn into a war zone.

Cops should not have to die because of politics.

Particularly the black neighborhood

Agreed. Also, quit with the unconstitutional DUI checkpoints. They’re not making any friends when they do this.

I grew up in a police family, so don’t need that BS that I don’t understand. I do understand, first hand.

Hmm, that could easily be turned around that if cops can’t handle it then it’s time to bring in Obama’s civilian army. Not a good thing.

Re post #9: I agree that cops have a certain arrogance that they need to temper, but it’s not THE problem.

A much bigger problem is that over the last 50 years or so blacks, and to a lesser degree whites, have done a very poor job of parenting, educating their children, and teaching family values.

In the short term, the situation could be MUCH improved if blacks and others would admit the truth about Trevon Martin and Michael Brown. Their deaths had nothing to do with their race. They died because they attacked men who had guns.

Checkin out this guy, he has been through a lot.

His brother was killed by drug dealers, his partner killed, and his own son, who described as having mental illness, killed a cop and another person before being gun down.

Lordy. I can’t even imagine seeing this much violence in my life and be willing and able to take the high road.

I have absolute respect for this man.
