Potential Trump VP Pick Clarifies He’s Pro-Life After Saying He’s Pro-Choice
Talking Points Memo ^ | 7/1/2016 | Kristin Salaky

A rumored choice for Donald Trump's running mate reversed his stance on abortion Monday, calling himself "a pro-life Democrat."

Just one day after saying the procedure should be a woman's choice, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn appeared to flip-flop on his view of abortion in a convoluted clarification to Fox News.

“This pro-choice issue is a legal issue that should be decided by the courts. I believe in law," Flynn told Fox News. "If people want to change the law, they should vote so that we can appoint pro-life judges. I believe the law should be changed."

He sent shockwaves through anti-abortion groups Sunday when he said on ABC’s “This Week” that women should have "sort of, the right of choice” with regard to abortion. Many interpreted Monday's backpedal as evidence Flynn was under serious consideration as a potential VP pick for Trump.

In the Fox News interview, Flynn went on to call himself a "pro-life Democrat" and said that he is focused on national security rather than “social issues, gay rights and abortion rights."

"If people are going to decide [the] election on abortion issue they should just stay home," he told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin.

Trump himself has taken a range of positions on the abortion over the years and previously identified as a Democrat.

Flynn has served as Defense Intelligence Agency director under President Barack Obama and is currently advising Trump.

Sounds like a politician. Changes his mind on principles, proving he is not sincere.

I’d rather Allen West.

He won’t get the black vote, but he’ll get the military vote.

Pence is a total sellout.

Newt or Sessions (or Fallin, but I doubt she made the final cut).

Doesn’t Trump already have all the military vote he could expect?

Then you should say the same about Trump on this issue.

I'd rather Allen West

It seems that part of the vetting process is those under consideration do two things: (1) they survive an interview with one of the toughest interviewers and (2) they're very comfortable when asked to come up and say something on their own in front of a Trump rally crowd.

How do we know Allen West, or any of the others who haven't been put through this, would do any better than General Flynn did?

FWIW, two that seem to have survived "the tests" but aren't on the reported short list are Santorum and Huckabee. Sessions certainly survived, but I can't imagine how Trump turns around the US Senate without Sessions there.

Still calling himself a Democrat? Not qualified to be on a Republican ticket. Secretary of Defense or National Security Advisor.

I thought Flynn removed himself from Trumps VP list because he is for abortion. Did I dream it?

Pro life IS pro choice.

Whatever you do in life ... and if there are options ... you choose.

As a clarifier ... pro abortion is pro choice.

Abortion is not an issue the President of the USA can directly do much about. The pro life movement must first win over the courts before Roe v Wade can be reversed. All you people saying you will not vote for Trump becuase of his position on this or that social issue are fools. Who do you want picking judges for the next four years? Hillary? You think Hillary is going to appoint pro life, pro traditional values judges? Wake Up, you are being played for dopes.
