A video of a white high school student publicly talking about race has gone viral, but not for the reasons one might expect when they hear the phrase 'privileged white teenager'. In May, 14-year-old Royce Mann participated in a poetry slam at his private school in Atlanta, Georgia and took home the first place prize for the poem he wrote, which he called White Boy Privilege. In it, the eighth grader is brutally honest about the ways in which he better off because he isn't black, Asian-American, Native American, or a woman — and signs off with a call to action to change that.

So why is it that so many mixed-race people who could pass for white choose to identify as black? Look at numerous “black” actresses and especially Congressman G.K. Butterfield in the House Black Caucus. And most transsexuals are men who want to identify as women rather than vice-versa.

Unfortunately, there are those who use “racist” as a synonym for conservative - when conservatives are the ones who are opposed to race-based preferences.

This kid is sad, and needs some reality-based education.

There is a general misunderstanding of what white privelige means. Most people assume it means that you just automatically get free shit and you do not need to work hard to attain it. That is false assumption. These white privelege junkies believe that with hard work rewards will come. What the believe to be white privilege is that black people have roadblocks that white do not have to endure. These roadblocks collectively prevent black people from being all they can be. These things are violent neighborhoods (which are violent because of the presence of black people), crime (black people), garbage and grafitti on the streets (black people), poorly performing schools (are they bad because of black children, or are they bad because of black teachers?) high rates of high school dropouts (ummm, black people?). White privilege is white kids not being forced to endure the dysfunction that comes with living in proximity to large numbers of other black people. There is a reason that when black people make it, they get themselves and their children out of those neighborhoods.

I've been thinking about this subject, and I've come to realize I've had certain privileges which are the a lot of black children haven't had.

My mother and father were married to each other their entire lives. They valued education; my mother taught me to read when I was in kindergarten. My father worked most of his life to save enough to send his children to college. They taught me values which have allowed me to avoid incarceration my entire life (except for for one night after a rather rowdy shore leave 50 years ago).

I was taught to have respect for my elders and for authority figures. When I forgot that, I got pretty rapid attitude adjustment therapy.

I was instilled by my father with a working ethic that kept me employed for nearly my entire adult lifetime. My wife and I saved for retirement. I never got any form of public assistance aside from the GI Bill to finish college after 4 years in the navy. This may sound like Neverland to many black people today. Having a Mother and a Father was a tremendous advantage to me, and I have been privileged because of it.

Being raised by Grandma because your baby daddy is in jail and Grandma doesn't know where baby momma is at any given time is a no-win situation. But that's something black people have to work on for themselves.

(Yes, the kid is an idiot, but I fail to see how the ethnicity/religion of his mother is relevant.)

Because, while white-appearing, many Jewish people consider themselves to have a distinct ethnic identity, and may even consider themselves to be part of an oppressed minority. This leaves them more open to white-bashing. If this kid is Jewish and his family is Jewish, he may not see himself as "white", but is presenting himself as such in order to promote this white guilt/white privilege idea more effectively.

Even if I was wealthy, I would never tell my child such a thing. My children think we have less money than we actually have. I would never raise I child who thinks his parents were rich(money-wise). They will have everything they could possibly need and then some, but I make sure they know they are not rich.

In eighth grade, when my eldest son learned about affirmative action in school, he and some friends were discussing it as they snacked at the table after school while I was in the office off the kitchen.

They discussed reverse discrimination/merit and then one said it’s because blacks can’t compete with whites. One asked “why can’t they compete with whites?” The other said that it was because they are inferior because of slavery. They pretty much agreed that racial inferiority was behind affirmative discrimination. Another summed it up with ‘either affirmative action is racist or blacks are really hopelessly inferior to whites.”
