Sen. Tim Scott: Yes, I've Been Stopped By The Cops Before...Even Here On Capitol Grounds

On Wednesday night, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) took to the Senate Floor to discuss his interactions with law enforcement. The conservative Republican said that the cops have stopped him several times in a year. In one instance, Capitol Police forced him to produce identification, despite wearing the official pin only given to members of the U.S. Senate. He said that he felt the pressure from the “scales of justice” when it's slanted, though that is not an excuse to attack and kill police officers (via Associated Press):

0:02 / 16:27 Senator Scott Shares Personal Experiences with Law Enforcement Officers as Black Man on Senate Floor

"I have felt the anger, the frustration, the sadness and the humiliation that comes with feeling like you're being targeted for nothing more than just being yourself," Scott said in a powerful floor speech reflecting upon the killings of police and by police that have shaken the nation.

He implored colleagues to "recognize that just because you do not feel the pain, the anguish of another ... does not mean it does not exist."

[…]

Scott talked about getting pulled over seven times in one year, and described an occasion when a police officer trailed him for blocks seemingly looking for a reason to stop him.

He talked about trying to enter the Capitol, as a senator wearing the official pin issued only to senators, and a Capitol Police officer stopped him and said: "'The pin I know. You, I don't. Show me your ID.'"

Wow! I had a GF whose father fought with Germany during WWII, but ALL my uncles here fought for the US, of cours.

But the relatives still over ther fought for Italy. they lost :)

Yeah, Southren NY troopers didn’t like us Eye Talians at their beaches, even though we brought all the real money. Not the local nickel and dimers at the bar :)

Of course you’ve been stopped by the cops, who hasn’t? But did they shoot you?....

In the late 1960’s, I was a young white engineering intern and working for an oil company in South Texas.

A cop (Hispanic and very deeply tanned, campaign hat, polished snake boots, and mirrored sunglasses) pulled me over while I was driving my ratty Chevy Nova.

He looked me and my license plate over and said, with a lot of authority: “Are you in the Navy, Boy?” “What are you doing here?”

Should I see a victim in the mirror every morning?

Biggest problem I have trying to work with black people is that they insist on such sloppy speech. I have tinnitus to begin with and trying to decipher something that sounds like grunting is just too much. Most start to speak like a human after I ask them what they said about forty times. It is not that they CAN’T speak clearly, they just don’t LIKE to. I love it when I meet the rare black person who speaks with perfect diction, even better than ninety percent of whites and I try to show them exceptional respect. Unfortunately a lot of young white people are going down the same road, sounding as if they just don’t have the energy to speak clearly. We have one grand nephew who will mumble for half a minute about something and I have no idea what he means to say. I keep telling him that if he wants me to respond he has to enunciate, I don’t reply to grunts.

Black Democrats lie all the time because they're addicted to the pity party - and dems reward black hate - reward black lies.

But this guy's a Republican AND he has received written apologies for various problems along this line before.

He's telling the truth.

But I'll bet he lives in a white neighborhood - - because he wanted to move his family away from the crime and violence that comes with a ‘black community’. He's not blind to reality - anymore than the cop is blind to reality. That's the rub.

It's a chicken and egg thing - which came first and how do we stop it without ‘pretending’... which is the preferred democrat way...

>>>The pin **IS** the ID. It’s only issued to sitting Senators<<<

Well thank goodness nobody can make a fake one and get past Security without having to Identify themselves.

The Government must use some super secret Alien Technology to manufacture those.

Are white Senators stopped like that all the time? If so, then you have a point. If they aren’t, then are you implying that only black people can make a fake Senator pin?

Rather we want to acknowledge it or not there still are some people who act crummy to a black person. For instance not putting change in their hand and other crap like that. I remember one time four of us went to the bank to get our pay checks cashed. The three of us who were white got ours cashed with no problem. The black girl had to show id. All of us together with checks from a major company. That’s got to eat at people.

That’s got to eat at people.

Apparently it eats their brain since they're willing to compare that to shootings of black criminals violently resisting arrest. Are their brains so corroded they don't understand the vast difference in crime rates?

In my 37 years driving in city of Chicago, I have lost count how many times I was stopped by cops, white and black. I am sure it is more than 37 total. I avoided being rude to the cops, and many times did not get a ticket. Many stops were for failure to display Chicago city sticker on windshield. That was the easy one. I lived far away in Downers Grove and did not need the expensive city sticker. But my job at 93rd and stony island required me to drive through 15 miles of Chicago streets every working day. When they wrote me a ticket, I made it a point to go to traffic court and fight it. I won majority of those instances. I prepared diagrams and charts based on law of physics. None of the cops had a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. They could not argue against laws of physics.

Do white people never get pulled over by cops on the capital grounds?

I was riding the back seat of a brand new Audi in Winston-Salem NC. The guys in the front were black. We got pulled over and the passenger said to the driver “No sweat. We got a white boy”. I spoke to the officer, let him know that I was white and these guys were driving me to a meeting. Sure enough, he let us go.

Not implying a thing.

I would hope that just having a “Pin” doesn’t get you through the door.

I can imagine a new guy on the Job who doesn’t know every Senator by Sight just letting someone walk by because they are wearing a Pin.

From his statement, it sounded like the Cop just didn’t recognize him, Being White isn’t a Cloaking Device.

Did Sen Scott mention the importance of having respect for LEO’s and NOT avoiding arrest? Just curious.

Yes, that is how those pins work. If you are wearing one, you get access to hallways, elevators, and rooms that are only accessible to Senators.

And you don’t have to show ID. If you had to show ID, then there would be no sense in wearing the pins. Either the pins are the IDs or they aren’t.

Sounds like a gaping hole in Security to me. It's ripe for a plot line in the next Mission Impossible Movie.
