The deceased suspect has been identified as Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri:

What doesn’t make sense is that Long shot and killed a black officer??

My guess is that the black officer was fulfilling his oath to protect and serve the people of Baton Rouge. As a result, the black officer was trying to kill Long. Long killed the officer in order to continue his plan of evil.
