‘He should have been mean.’

Positively not. I’ve been a Newt critique, but last night he was brilliant-off-the-charts.

Look at it this way. Trump needed three things: Cruz’ comments neutralized, the door left open for Cruz supporters to get behind Trump, and a loud and clear message sent that there is more unity than antipathy/dissent inside the convention hall.

Newt knocked all three out of the park. He turned Cruz’ comments into a Trump endorsement; he did so without unnecessarily ruffling a single feather of the Cruz supporters Trump hopes to absorb, and Newt did it all while making it appear that peace and harmony reign supreme at the convention.

Bravo, Newt; it was a tour de force.

Here’s the problem and where Christians miss it; Cruz looks like a sheep, but is a wolf. Trump looks like a wolf, but is a sheep.

Cruz essentially told his troops not to feel obligated to vote for the Republican nominee, but we actually do need as many votes as possible. Hillary starts off with quite a larger number of solid blue state electoral votes than we do electoral votes from guaranteed red states. We have to win a much larger number of swing states than she does.

Newt was using Cruz’s words to tell his supporters, by Cruz’s own standards, we all must vote for Trump. This is bigger than that little backstabber Cruz. We need a party as united as possible to defeat Hillary. I didn’t like seeing Newt on later with Hannity essentially defending Cruz, but I do think he probably did the right thing in his speech with his creative “reinterpretation” to get the Cruzers onboard the Trump train.

Nice follow up!

Elder Republican Statesman Gingrich shows class in the heat of moment in his helping with young Teddy's message to the faithful.

I think you may have really hit on something there. Just look at how people view these two men who know them personally. We can all see the guinuine affection and devotion Trump’s children have for him, while Cruz’s daughter shied away from him with a look of disgust when getting off the bus and later ran away from him onstage.

Trump’s workers are very loyal to him overwhelmingly and speak highly of him. Everyone who knows him says that he’s down to earth and a good listener. Almost everyone who works with Ted can’t stand him and does not think he is a decent or trustworthy colleague. (Contrast this too with Tea Partier Mike Pence, whom everyone who knows him seems to like.) Cruz’s roommate from college even remembers him with disgust.

Trump has tremendous numbers of friends from all walks of life. Cruz has Mike Lee (who still waited forever to endorse him).

“I like Newt, he’s a fast one. I hope he has a very visible role in the new administration.”

Wholehearted agreement here.

Newt was a great example of a man big enough to take the high road. He was obviously disappointed not to be the VP pick but still was willing to not only support Trump but tweak the nose of the weasel, sore Cruzer.

I'm thinking that Cruz has turned into a right-wing Christian version of Ted Kennedy (not a compliment).

You nailed it but good.....a great take on St Ted.

This is why I don’t like Newt....he didn’t need to tell us what Cruz was saying, we knew what he was saying...

Newt is great on history, but when it comes to other things he’s a mess...

Cruz was given the rope last night, and he hung himself for his whole political career...it will be his last...he is not liked in the Senate, now he is not liked in Texas and he sure in the heck isn’t liked in America....

He should have been mean.

No, Gingrich was the "elder statesman" last night and that is a good role for him. Cruz provided enough nastiness, Gingrich didn't need to join in. And, he didn't. In fact, my hubby's opinion of Gingrich's speech was that "he is trying very hard to rescue Cruz's career for him". Personally, I don't think it is now possible to rescue his career.

Newt tried to throw Cruz a rope.
It didn’t work.
