This was a moment that millions of Americans, some of them very weird indeed, have been praying for. This was the moment that tens of millions of others viewed with fear, revulsion, disbelief.
The most divisive political figure in modern U.S. history became his party’s standard-bearer for the presidential election.
After I wrote in the Mail in February that a Donald Trump presidency was a real possibility, I was teased as if I had suggested that it might snow in July.
Today, a distant spectre has grown into something much bigger and scarier. The prospect will give sleepless nights to many world leaders, both America’s friends and foes.
Vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence said the country ‘has only one choice’ at the ballot box: ‘It’s change versus the status quo, and when Donald Trump is president, the change will be huge.’ This is, indeed, the reason that a mendacious and xenophobic braggart could win the greatest elective office on earth.
His opponent is Hillary Clinton. She’s widely hated — ruthless and bossy.
Even my clever East Coast friends, who are petrified of Trump, say they will need to take painkillers before going out to vote for her.
Across middle America, in the vast territories where this election will be decided, away from the country’s narrow sophistication belts, many people are happy to believe the worst conspiracy stories about any member of the Clinton family.

The “elite, sophisticated coastal belts” are ten miles deep and ten feet wide. Go west of Boston 40 miles and you enter the territory of real Americans who believe in the Constitution, and leave the territory of the permanently-aggrieved, onion-shaped, 80-IQ, gun-grabbing, hatred-filled flag burners.
This demonstrates the total arrogance of these a$$holes perfectly.
Trump “the most divisive...” On the other hand, we’ve seen that those GOP stiffs uttering the notorious brain dropping “I’m a uniter” have actually said “I’m a loser.”
I wish I was as stupid as Trump.

The Royals will be satraps in the new Muslim Empire. Buckingham Palace will have big arrows painted on the floor pointing toward Mecca. And you’ll be just another kneeling babbling pedophile who cleans his posterior with his bare hand.
That’s always a possibility.
I wanted to respond but this sums it up well.
The general rule is that two-thirds of Europeans (and Canadians) think like that, and the other third can understand why Americans, like themselves, want strong leadership that is based on a foundation of respected laws and borders.
Europeans should understand by now the follies of weak unprotected borders (no longer between each other so much as between them and the Islamic world).
Canadians who take an anti-American position (not me obviously) are even more ridiculous because we take for granted a strongly defined border and would never tolerate any mass incursions across our border.
I’m thinking of running for the leadership of our own Conservative Party on a platform of building a wall on our southern border and having Hillary Clinton pay for it. We don’t want to be swamped by fleeing American leftists again.
Anyway, I am glad the man has clever friends in a narrow belt of sophistication. That sounds like the recipe for an active sex life to me. Oh, wait, he’s British. Oh well.

It’s a bright new world out there, with Donald J. Trump as the sun beginning to rise over a dry and devastated American landscape where the citizens shiver under the burden of ‘just holding on and hoping we don’t get nuked by ISIS’. Hillary’s shadow looms, but barring extensive Democratic cheating at the ballot box by making millions of new voters from illegal aliens and refugees and dead people, Donald should win.
