Democratic PAC Files FEC Complaint Over Melania Trump's RNC Speech

CLEVELAND — A Democratic super PAC has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission charging that the Trump campaign broke federal election law by using his corporation to advance his presidential campaign.

The complaint was filed after Meredith McIver took the blame for cribbing parts of Michelle Obama's 2008 convention speech for Melania Trump's speech at the Republican National Convention Monday night.

The complaint, filed by a grassroots-based super PAC formed this spring called the Democratic Coalition Against Trump, says McIver's involvement in the speechwriting is a violation of campaign finance law because she has received no compensation from the campaign but is an employee of the Trump Organization. The campaign is expected to list all in-kind contributions of goods and services in campaign finance reports.

"This incident is reminiscent of the John Edwards campaign finance scandal, which likewise involved work paid for by a corporation for a presidential campaign. As such, it is very troubling," Jon Cooper, chairman of the Coalition, said.

The complaint assumes that McIver has received compensation from the Trump Organization — in part because in a statement released to the press, McIver said she offered her resignation to Trump but he rejected it.

The letter released to the press was on Trump Organization, and not Trump campaign, letterhead.

"There is reason to believe that Meredith McIver has been performing Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. campaign duties and is being compensated by the Trump Organization for those duties, and not by Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.," the complaint reads.

"There is reason to believe that the Trump Organization is using its corporate name in other ways, and potentially is using its corporate name to facilitate contributions to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.," it continues.

However, the ideologically divided FEC is often deadlocked on issues, rendering the oversight committee toothless.

This is the first I've heard of this. Does this have any legs, or will it be brushed aside by the FEC.

Melania is not the candidate, so I don't see how it is germane who wrote her speech or who paid the speechwriter.

“A Democratic super PAC has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission charging that the Trump campaign broke federal election law by using his corporation to advance his presidential campaign.”

His defense should be wholly:

I didn’t INTEND to do that.

If what I was reading right here on FR is correct, the speechwriter who actually caused this, is a democrat.

Not sure if that is true, but that’s what I read.

This is why you need experienced people to manage your campaign and keep you from making very easy mistakes. I’m hoping this doesn’t go anywhere, but the laws they refer to do exist and often (not always) are enforced.

Like compensation for writing a speech is equal to paying hush money to keep a love child secret.

These people are down in the weeds.

Obama received millions of dollars in illegal foreign donations during his campaigns and the FEC did nothing.

This is such a fun joke. A Hillary supporter sees the email scandal as a non-issue, the death of 4 Americans as just fine, the breaking of oaths of office as just a Republican witch hunt, and the list goes on.

Then, when they hear that there were some lines lifted in two paragraphs of that speech they become indignant and claim: OMG - what she did was completely unethical!!

And then raise high hell over it. HA!!

The Trump organization is a privately held company. Trump cannot take campaign funds and pay someone not involved with the campaign, but he can use his own money to pay someone to help out the campaign.

An in-kind contribution wouldn’t be reported until later in the quarter anyway I believe. If it is an in-kind contribution.
Nonsense for the media nonsense-factory.

I think the fact they are starting with this type of stuff now shows they are desperate. If they felt more confident about the election they would keep this in their back pocket encase they need it later.

This is nothing more than the typical Clinton and Democrat playbook — make a big issue out of every little thing because then the media will blow it up and the dumb American people will get a nagging feeling that there is something nefarious with Trump and his campaign. At the same time, serious accusations against Clinton and the Democrats are ignored by the media. It is typical and happens every election cycle.

They’re scared to death of Melania. Possibly the most beautiful woman to ever grace the White House is a major threat to the Democrats. Look to see them Palinize the private, retiring Melania. Good luck with that!

Anyone notice how gentlemanly, normal and handsome little Barron was? (I may be misspelling his name.)

Yeah, right. If this is really what they think can derail the Trump Train they are woefully STUPID! (worse than I imagined)

“Enter the Democratic Coalition Against Trump and the super political action committee, Keep America Great, that oversees it. While other super PACs have formed to stop either Trump or Mrs. Clinton, underscoring the negative partisanship driving this election, this one is unique in its attempt to amplify grass-roots activism nationally with grass-roots money.”
