As for the notion that Reagan's rhetoric was purely positive and aspirational here's a line from his speech at the 1980 convention: "Back in 1976, [Jimmy] Carter said, 'Trust me.' And a lot of people did. Now, many of those people are out of work. Many have seen their savings eaten away by inflation. Many others on fixed incomes, especially the elderly, have watched helplessly as the cruel tax of inflation wasted away their purchasing power. And, today, a great many who trusted Mr. Carter wonder if we can survive the Carter policies of national defense."
One other point: The fact that so many commentators felt that Trump's speech was too dark is simply a sign of how out-of-touch folks inside the Beltway really are. For more than 10 years, Americans have been saying that the country is on the wrong track. And the press just ignored them. Consider this from a writer at uber-liberal Salon, which seemed to have a sudden epiphany about the power of Trump's message: "From the ashen, haunted faces around me in the press gallery, and the conversations over hastily guzzled drinks before and after, I feel sure I wasn't the only person here who felt as if he were suffering from PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder], sunstroke, and a stomach virus, all at the same time. Still, it was an educational bout with the existential flu.
Anybody who still thought Donald Trump was a joke and a dumbass who would humiliate himself and his party go down to Mondale-scale defeat now knows better. You can pick Trump's speech apart and examine its flaws, of course, but from the point of view of performance and dynamics only one verdict is possible. He killed it. He. Killed. It."

Trump’s speech was only “dark” to those who hate Free America and its Free Citizens.
The Dems are trapped in their museum of old ideas because they couldn’t quite close the deal and get our guns away from us between 1992 and now. Wonder what they will do between now and Jan 17 to get over this lack...?

Consider this from a writer at uber-liberal Salon, which seemed to have a sudden epiphany about the power of Trump's message: "
Er, no. Why would you think that? Laura doesn't write for Salon. Her words stop at the opening quotation-mark.
There might be 1 real reporter left. The rest are Leftadists.
I don’t know how anybody with an I.Q. above that of a turnip could NOT vote for Trump.
Yes she was....but since we had been talking about bushes
Donald J. Trump’s speech was the best I have ever heard; and
I will be 70 this month! That man has actually worked in
his life and done really GREAT things all over the world.
- He said at the end of his speech, “I LOVE YOU!” to the
ordinary people of this country. I believe him. After
8 yrs. of the America-whitey hating Obama & Hillary & their
minions causing the WHOLE WORLD to blow up around our ears,
I AM WILLING TO TRY THE positive things TRUMP has
suggested as he will have to work overtime to be any
worse than the Kenyan has been! I am willing to do my part;
which may be just contributing where I can. I WILL and I
believe that Donald Trump has faith in Americans to
STAND AND DELIVER!!!
When dems are the challengers the MSM makes no mention of their phony attacks as being too dark. No, this is just a ploy.
The media carpet bombed Reagan like they have carpet bombed Trump.
It was glorious. They spent the spring of 1980 picking between Carter and Teddy Kennedy, thinking the Democrat Party had a divine right to rule at all times. They think the unholy hag has the same ascendancy scheduled for next January.
The Gipper handed them their heads. So they immediately set about howling that people were duped and fooled into voting for Reagan. Just a preview of coming attractions.
I watched it on YouTube as I did most of the convention.
True, the Mediascum are the enemy, and they are conducting a coordinated campaign to try to weaken and bring down Trump. Just the pervasiveness of the instantanaeous “dark vision” meme made it obvious the extent to which they receive and act upon the talking points sent around by Media Matters, the DNC, and the Hillary campaign.
The Wikileaks DNC releases are showing how close the collusion is between leading MSM types and the ‘Rats. Remember that these leaks are only (so far) from finance officials, not even from the media/communications side of the DNC and the Hillary campaign. It is the PR/communications types who would have far far more contact with the churnalists. If/when more leaks should show the public what went around among the “communications” staffers and the MSM types, I expect that we will see more pervasive and enthusiastic collusion than most of us imagined in our darkest hours.
Consider just the fact that Wasserman Schultz thinks she can give marching orders to CHuck Todd (the top political guy for NBC) to tell Mika what is or is not acceptable to Her Highness DWS. That was truly incredible. But maybe not surprising.....
Yes, the Salon-head did us the favor of candidly describing the extent of left-wing MSM bias for Hillary and against Trump. Like the infamous Pauline Kael quote regarding Nixon, this writer can’t imagine that any journalist around him is not fervently anti-Trump. They are all biased hacks.
Sorry...I misunderstood
