Berlin (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday rebuffed calls to reverse her welcoming stance toward refugees after a series of brutal attacks in the country.
Merkel, who interrupted her summer holiday to face the media in Berlin, said the four assaults within a week were "shocking, oppressive and depressing" but not a sign that authorities had lost control.
The German leader said the assailants "wanted to undermine our sense of community, our openness and our willingness to help people in need".
"We firmly reject this," she said at a wide-ranging news conference.
Merkel repeated her rallying cry from last year when she opened the borders to people fleeing war and persecution, many from Syria, which brought nearly 1.1 million migrants and refugees to Germany in 2015.
"I am still convinced today that 'we can do it' -- it is our historic duty and this is a historic challenge in times of globalisation," she said.
"We have already achieved very, very much in the last 11 months."
Merkel was speaking after a axe rampage, a shooting spree, a knife attack and a suicide bombing stunned Germany, leaving 13 people dead, including three assailants, and dozens wounded.
Three of the four attackers were asylum seekers, and two of the assaults were claimed by the Islamic State group.

Although we've had attacks in country since 9/11 with no civilian response (SanBernardino, Orlando, Boston marathon, Recruiting Center, Ft.Hood, DC snipers, et al), once they hit our kids like in a Beslan or Nice, all bets are off.

“Wanting the Syrians” is a phrase that won’t fit or work in this situation.
You had (at least through 2014/2015) an enormous number of Germans (probably over 2/3’s of the country) who felt they were doing a noble and good thing....plus the news people of state-run TV doubled down the message every single night. Remember, they carry around the effect of the Holocaust and those bad-evil Nazi episodes.
Oddly, after the events in Koln on 31 December 2015, and the screwed-up reporting by state-run news on the sexual assaults and circus-like operations by the cops there...most of the public sentiment has shifted. At best, in terms of supporting the Merkel ‘open-door’...it’s around one-third of the nation still supporting it.
The issue is that from the five parties that have a standing in the Bundestag (parliament)....four are hand-cuffed to Merkel’s ‘open-door’, and the remaining party is the CSU....the Barvarian conseratives who can’t run nationally but complained loudly against the ‘open-door’.
So, the outsider in this game is a minor party that existed in the last election (the AfD Party) who has gained momentum nationally as the anti-immigration party. In 2013, without any immigration woes, the AfD took only 1.9-percent of the national vote. Right now, they’ve taken votes away from almost every established party and are running in national polls near 12-to-15 percent. In each state election as they come and go....they pick up more support around the nation.
National election is scheduled for November of 2017, with Merkel NOT running. It’s going to be an interesting election because even if the AfD doesn’t win....they will probably get near 20-percent of public support and create a marginally functional coalition government between the winner and what parties can partner up with the winner.
