This is a condescending review of a book that is not condescending at all. It’s honest and thoughtful, even loving toward people who were often not particularly lovable. Well worth a read. Sorry this is what the Post did with it.
Any condescension went right over my head. To me, the review didn't seem out of touch with what Vance said in an interview I read. It seemed sympathetic enough--it actually made me want to read the book more than the interview had. Sounds like a great book, and a crucial one, to understand the country and time we actually inhabit.
The demographics on TV would make you believe that 30 percent of Americans were white, and most of those only interested in prescription drugs you need to discuss with your doctor or medical professional.
Meanwhile, an ancestral voice is saying, "Hold muh beer and watch this!"
