A chief petty officer has become the first woman to earn the Navy's "silver dolphins," signaling an enlisted sailor qualified to serve aboard a submarine.
Chief culinary specialist Dominique Saavedra will deploy aboard the nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine Michigan in coming months, the first sub to deploy with a crew including enlisted female sailors.
According to an announcement from Submarine Group 9, out of Puget Sound, Washington, Saavedra received her pin at a ceremony Tuesday, marking a major milestone for female sailors.

I remember when I got my gold dolphins. When my CO did my final board, it consisted of “go relieve the officer of the deck”. I was 26 years old or so and the officer of the deck of a nuclear powered sub with 16 ballistic missiles. Thankfully, I never screwed up that bad.

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. It’s sad and sickening how Political Correctness is not just ruining the country but also our military. Putting women on submarines will not make them more effective. In fact, it will add another unnecessary wrinkle in an already complicated and stressful environment.
As a qualified submariner from the 1980’s, I have a feeling her quals were given to her on a silver platter. If I met her, I would say that to her face. There are places for women to serve in the military where the contribute to making the unit more effective. I will never believe that a submarine is a place for any woman.

I don’t know; when I earned my dolphins half the crew lined up to “pin” me. Doubt if they’ll do that to her but then again that tradition is probably long gone in today’s sissy Navy.
