Road Trip: Fort Riley, Kansas

Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails.

In the years after the Civil War, Fort Riley served as a major United States Cavalry post and school for cavalry tactics and practice. The post was a base for skirmishes with Native Americans after the Civil War ended in 1865, during which time George Custer was stationed at the fort.

The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First".

The early history of Fort Riley is closely tied to the movement of people and trade along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. These routes, a result of then popular United States doctrine of "Manifest Destiny" in the middle of the 19th century, prompted increased American military presence for the protection of American interests in this largely unsettled territory. During the 1850s, a number of military posts were established at strategic points to provide protection along these arteries of emigration and commerce.

In the fall of 1852, a surveying party under the command of Captain Robert Chilton, 1st U.S. Dragoons, selected the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers as a site for one of these forts. This location, approved by the War Department in January 1853, offered an advantageous location from which to organize, train and equip troops in protecting the overland trails.

Poor Lynn-Dah....I never knew dogs were NOT supposed to eat grass. I thought they knew when they needed to barf and took care of the issue with grass.

Yes...there is always cat hair. LOL!

I hope the other kittehs don’t get jealous that she’s getting the Fancy Feast and they’re just having kibble. LOL!

With 35 kittehs, there’s always LOTS of cat hair. LOL! We go through a LOT of vacuum bags.

The others get Friskies canned food once a day, as does Piper usually. I did feed her the FF away from the others so they wouldn’t steal it. That’s what I have to do with Darla when she goes off her feed. She has IBD and it happens every now and then. After a can or two of FF, she gets back on track.

Children are probably easier to deal with than cats. LOL

Probably...since they can at least sort of tell you why they hurt or feel bad. But kittehs are fun, too!

Mine are fine lately, except Peaches, my male, has some sort of sores on his nose. Probably allergies. He had them last summer and the vet said autoimmune disease. She gave him antibiotic. They didn’t really go away till the weather cooled and they only came back when we got the extreme heat. I’m thinking they’re heat-related. I guess if they don’t fade when weather cools...if it ever does!...I’ll take him back for another shot. Or WE will. He’s so big and heavy, I can’t carry him let alone in a carrier. LOL!

Wouldn’t it be nice if we were like Dr. Doolittle and could talk to animals? Sure would make it easier when they’re not feeling well.

But then again, we’d know what they’re saying when they “talk back” to us. LOL!

Poor Peaches. Can’t be fun having sores on his nose. I hope they go away when the weather cools, and that it cools soon.
If he’s as heavy as our Dexter, it’s not easy at all to carry him. Dex weighs around 18 pounds and with the carrier weight added ..... OUCH! Thankfully, he doesn’t get sick so no trips to the vet. WHEW!!

Didn’t know if you were watching shows tonight or keeping an eye on the Oz eaglets. I’ve been watching both.
Getting ready to go out to burn trash since it rained today. Been holding off with it being so dry and it needs to go!

I have watched them off and on, but it’s kind of depressing when they are getting so little food; even #17 is lethargic. Even the Mom has no crop to speak of today. You’d think that them living so close to water would insure them having lots of fresh fish!

I forgot to check the post # right after I posted to see how close it was. LOL! What was I thinkin’! :)

The chatters are wondering about the lack of food. Lady brought one fish today (that’s eaten now) and Dad’s brought nothing.

SE17’s crop needed a break! They stuffed that lil bird so much yesterday, it looked like its crop was going to burst.
SE18 hasn’t eaten anything since Sat. afternoon. Somehow still sitting up occasionally but .....

Cams aren’t working right now so I guess it’s a good time to go out to burn the trash. Maybe the cams will be working when that’s done.

Go empty your trash...and I’ll go get some sleep. I’m getting drowsy. All that show-watching I guess.LOL!

Trash is burned and we’re good for a little while again. Whew, I’m going to need a quick shower before going to bed. It’s still warm outside and the fire was hot.

I keep forgetting it’s winter in Australia and was surprised to see it’s already dark - - only 6 p.m. there now. Lady’s settled on the babies for the night though one is “squeeing”. Probably hungry SE18. SE17 got fed well so is in good shape. I’m with you in hoping the hunting is better tomorrow and poor lil SE18 will get to eat too.

I got there in mid ‘94. Didn’t leave until mid ‘99.

Sadly I went to an even worse place. Fort Gordon, Georgia. But the army made up for it after that with a 3 1/2 year stretch in beautiful Hawaii!!!

She slept beautifully last night.

I think the problem comes if the doggies eats TOO MUCH grass. Since it is indigestible to them, it might cause an obstruction.

But Lynn-Dah seems to know exactly WHICH grass to eat and how much, to solve her problem.

The Creator knows what His creatures need.
