Are we watching the demise of the Solid South?
Election Projection ^ | August 17, 2016 | Scott Elliott

Over the last 30 years or so, one aspect of presidential elections has been pretty consistent. The GOP nominee usually doesn’t have to break a sweat to carry the southern states. From 1980 through 2004, with two notable exceptions – Jimmy Carter’s home state of Georgia in 1980 and a few states during southern-boy Bill Clinton’s two runs – Republicans enjoyed complete dominance in the swath of states from Virginia to Texas

That may be changing. This year’s battle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is unusual to say the least. Not in my lifetime have two candidates with unfavorables as high as these contested the White House. It’s been well-documented how disliked the pair of nominees are. Unfortunately for conservatives like me, it appears, at least for the time being, that Trump is the more disliked of the two. And we’re seeing one affect of his dismal likeability in recent polling data.

Yes very conservative over there. I went to college in Tallahassee. Let’s hope the panhandle pulls it off for Trump.

Exactly! We have a lot of good jobs down here and we are seeing a lot of immigration of people from up North due to so many jobs leaving those states. Unfortunately they bring their liberal ways with them. Not all, but too many.

It’s hard to believe that Hillary could take any state in the South no matter who her opponent is.

As will the country. I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trump will thump Cankles in a style remeniscent of 1984 or 1988. Overwhelming, convincing, merciless.

NC and FL are purple. The rest of the South is Red.

Don't forget Virginia. But otherwise, I think you're right.

You seem to be too young to remember the 1964 election featuring the most corrupt candidate of all times LBJ convincing folks that it is better to vote for a crook than a supposed fool Barry Goldwater.

Look up Billy Sol Estes and Bobby Baker, then tell me that the Clintons are the most corrupt ever. Not by a long shot? Would Barry Goldwater have been better? We might not have lost so many folks in Nam. I did four tours there, partly my choice. Will I go to hell for what I did there? I hope St. Peter is merciful to me when I stand before him.

I see the same meme being played here, better to vote for the crook. I say HELL NO, vote for the fool. We think he is the fool only because the filthy rotten corruptocrats want us to think so.

Northern and California migration to parts of Dixie has hurt the ever steady social conservatism of white voters

Florida

Virginia

North Carolina

Soon as the illegals and brown birth rate overtake then Texas is gone to and so are we all

So beautiful white women of the south from decent families and minds right....get to cracking ladies and save America with your ovaries and uteri

And no I ain’t joking

Somewhere in north Dallas or Madison county Mississippi or south Birmingham or the Florida panhandle etc. lies the genetic salvation of traditional America

It’s not even debatable

The south has always been culturally conservative and the white population fairly homogenous

Which is why in 1964 Goldwater carried FIVE Deep South states and Arizona only

Southern democrats like Stennis and Eastland were far more culturally rightist than all but a few GOP

It wasn’t like it is today

Of course after throwing off the yoke of reconstruction in 77/78 they never looked back in a big way till Tower and Lott and others which really got things turned around after Carter first term with Magnus

I think Magnus carried all the South but Georgia

Btw as we are learning the hard way right now

The GOP still suck overall

They only look good compared to modern Dems and even then barely

If Trump loses we need another party

Today’s GOP are by and large Humphrey Dems

It’s like a street: the litter gets removed, but it always comes back in even bigger amounts unless it is picked up daily, which is impossible!

Our urban areas in NC are full of liberals who are from somewhere else; our black population will always vote Democrap. And we have our own irksome native leftists. Not enough to take control yet but enough to be significant.

The infusion of immigrants, government workers, and upper class Yankee liberals are eroding parts of the South.
