Who would have thought that Donald Trump, of all people, would be addressing the fact that the black community suffers the most from a breakdown of law and order? But sanity on racial issues is sufficiently rare that it must be welcomed, from whatever source it comes.
When establishment Republicans have addressed the problems of blacks at all, it has too often been in terms of what earmarked benefits can be offered in exchange for their votes. And there was very little that Republicans could offer to compete with the Democrats' whole universe of welfare state earmarks.
Law and order, however, is not an earmarked benefit for any special group. It is a policy for all that is especially needed by law-abiding blacks, who are the principal victims of those who are not law-abiding.
Education is another area where something that is needed by all segments of the population is especially needed by blacks and other low-income minorities. In other words, here again there is no need for a divisive policy of earmarked benefits, in order to attract new voters into a "big tent."
No matter what policy Republicans follow, they are not going to win a majority of the black votes this year, nor perhaps even this decade.
Nor is that necessary. Just an erosion of the Democrats' monopoly of the black votes can benefit both Republicans and the black community, who are currently taken for granted by the Democrats. Republicans may also get more white votes if they are no longer seen by some as racists.

Never Trump nit wits just can't help themselves. I used to admire Thomas Sowell but his self righteous and superior attitude towards my next President have considerably diminished him in my eyes.
Thomas Sowell was outed as a fraud Establishment stooge when he participated in National Reviews “Against Trump” edition.
Thomas Sowell is probably correct when he states that Republicans are years away from winning the black vote but that doesn't mean that we can't make inroads now and chip away at it. The Democrats, especially Obama, have done nothing positive for the black people.
Throwing more welfare and government money at them does absolutely nothing to solve the underlying problems of poverty, hopelessness and despair that have plagued that community for too long.
Since LBJ, things have gotten progressively worse in this regard. The irony is that the Republican Party was formed in large part to address the plight of the black people and free them from slavery. Yet they have allowed the Democrats to pretty much enslave them all over again. No Republican until Donald Trump has had the guts to start pointing this out.
Even the great Ronald Reagan stumbled in this regard. I remember during the 1980 campaign, he made a trip to Harlem to point out the decaying government housing projects and was shouted down by the residents there. He never seemed to make an effort to reach out to them again. A mistake in my opinion that has been repeated by most Republicans ever since.
I have a feeling that Donald Trump will also get "shouted down" by many when he goes to Jackson, MS next week. I hope that he stands his ground and sticks to his guns, then visits other black communities during this campaign cycle. In that way, I believe he will earn the respect of enough of them to gain considerable black votes in November. Then we can work on continuing to improve on that in the future.

This is a convoluted mismash of paragraphs heaped together for a deadline.
He was an anti-Trumper the last time I checked. I suppose that negates anything he might have to say.

Trump isn’t afraid to ask blacks for their vote and point out how the Dems never do anything for them. Things McStain and Romney would never do.
Which is kind of like saying "even a stopped clock is right twice a day."
Trump's come up with ethical solutions - - the 'right thing to do'. Erosion of the democrat's hold - or not - isn't the issue. We do what's right and let the chips fall where they may... (
Gotta question this line by Sowell: “and anyone else in the black community who understands that a good education is the key for the next generation to advance.” I really wonder how many in that community understand that. Seems the latest thing from that community is that education is too white centric and therefore is isn’t worth it to Blacks. Until Blacks get past that idea, education won’t matter a damn to Blacks cause it is seen as just giving in to the white man.
Dr Sowell you need to step back and look at Trump dispassionately rather then through the lens of someone elses' bigotry.
In this case you have allowed what other people told you about someone to influence your narrative rather then the man himself.
Anyone who had actually looked at what Trump has said and done during the past twenty years did not find any of what he said surprising.
Yes, Trump is different then your average GOP politician. But, as you point out in your article, what they were doing was not working. They were so stuffed into their group think molds that they could not see what was clear to the rest of us. And what is clear to Trump.
Although he is who I support now, I have often said that Trump was not my first choice in the primary. Now I am beginning to wonder if he should have been my first choice for this very reason.
He does not looks at the world though the lens of book ideology but in terms of what can be done and what will work.
He does not look at people as groups to be pandered to, but as individuals to be told that there is a way out of whatever mess they are in if they are willing to try and he will help.
I keep hearing that "Trump is not a Conservative" yet what he is doing is the very heart of conservatism.

Just because I don’t have any use for Thomas Sowell doesn’t mean somebody else should not. Go nuts.
I’d just rather use that few minutes of my life reading something written by someone in the new media who hasn’t yet shown me that he can’t be trusted.
He’s trying to get there. He’s trying to come back from his disgraceful participation in the “Against Trump” issue of NR. He’s trying to support Trump for the purpose of not supporting Hillary.
But he’s just not getting there yet.

I have such great respect for Dr Sowell. I truly believe, that as the campaign rolls on and as Trump shows his abilities (such as the trip to the flooded areas in Louisiana happening today) he will ultimately defeat the Clinton machine. As well he should.
I will not trash Dr Sowell because he is ultimately a good, decent, very intelligent man. He knows economics like no other.
