On the Tube in London there’s a sign saying “Mind The Gap” to warn riders to be careful when stepping on the train – NBC might want to pay attention to the expression when it comes to Olympics ratings.
With a 4.0/14 rating among adults 18-49 and 16.85 million viewers for the Closing Ceremony of the Rio Games, NBC is looking at the worst Summer Olympics results in decades. Not only are fast affiliates down to the second lowest result of the 2016 Olympics for the Comcast-owned net’s primetime coverage but they took a whooping 56% fall in the key demo and dropped 44% viewershipwise from the closing of London 2012.
Perhaps even worse is that Rio 2016’s last hurrah wasn’t up that much from the early numbers of the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Last night saw a rise of just 10% in viewers and 21% in among the 18-49s from the end of the 2014 Games on February 23 of that year. In fact, last night was down 49% in the demo in early numbers from the fast affiliates of August 14 – which saw Usain Bolt speed to another gold.
All of which left a special 10:30 – 11 PM edition of The Voice (2.7/10) with little bounce and close to it’s usual non-Olympics results. CBS’s Big Brother (1.8/7) was even with last week as was BrainDead (0.3/1). Celebrity Family Feud (1.1/4), The $100,000 Pyramid (1.0/4) and Match Game (0.9/4) were even, up a tenth for the two latter ABC shows from last week.

Only part of the closing i was interested in was the Tokyo part. London, Russia, even China was far better.
I swear if NBC tries to monopolize Tokyo i’m going there myself! This is at least the third or fourth time NBC has screwed up the Olympics. I’m going to post suggestions on Donald Trumos Facebook page to see if he can change things for the better.
I’ve been to Brazil and I’m glad they got the Olympics. Great sports country. Was there 8 days and never had an unpleasant experience. Iguazu Falls one of the wonders of the world. And the beaches are as spectacular as you’d think. thousands of kids playing soccer on the beach without little league rules and parents going crazy.
I record the olympics and fast forward, especially the opening and closing, I grew up with 3 hours coverage per night with highlights mostly and some live track and field.
Now there are 6 channels on my DirecTV carrying a variety of sports and 1 channel showing 6 screens so you can see the events and decide where to go. May of those spirits get little or no TV coverage any time. Fans can pick their favorites.
The camera work and technology provides view you can’t get anywhere even the front row. So if you think Brazil is a hell hole sit back and watch Phelps do a fantastic turn or some 19 year old girl super track star get a bunch of medals.
I like the human interest stories., That’s why when the US is not in a final, I can cheer for the Serbia mail man who works out till midnight and then gets up and goes to work the next day. If you don’t like it, again, fast forward,
The olympics are the greatest sporting events in history. It’s a chance for the world to drop the BS and compete n the filed, the court, and the pool. I like the concept.
I’m about 70 and I’ll watch them another 3 or 4 times as much as I can. The rest of you can whine all you want and find something which pleases you. UFC is getting a lot of play these days.

I think you nailed. The Olympics have been "feminized."
We don’t need to be manipulated in sobbing or whatever for some athlete because they lost their pet hamster at age 3.
this is what happens when the media is obsessed with pitching
90% of the coverage to females...
1. A mute button that keeps the channel muted, quieting the talking heads (yak, yak, yak)
2. Pandora or similar music station in a fine speaker beside you, calming and enjoyable.
3. A good book to read during commercials. ... and with all the commercials you can actually nearly finish a long book.
So I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics on NBC ... loved seeing the City of Rio again even tho virtual, wonderful to see the great athletes ... didn't get into the (Made for TV) scandal of the swimmer (couldn't hear what they were talking about). So there IS a way to enjoy it, even on NBC.
One saving grace, however, was getting to see all the hot sexy women athletes:

Outstanding. The 1980 USA Olympic hockey team and the great Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths are the two events that I am so glad I was alive to have experienced. What Herb Brooks did in developing that team will never be repeated.

I watched the closing of the Olympics Sunday night with disabled people in my family. We were ready for a good show. Sadly, the music was third world and boring, the commercials were repeating themselves and the athletes bunched up in a crowd. We switched to Antiques Roadshow after 40 minutes.
I didn’t watch one minute of the Olympics.
But thoroughly enjoyed the images of the green swimming pool and story about the kayaker hitting the underwater sofa.
Me too. We had it on most of the day on the “off channels”. Rugby was great and I enjoyed some sports I didn’t think I would. Didn’t watch much prime time.
The closing ceremonies drop could be explained for U.S. ratings - London has a common language and more similar culture to ours with celebrities will known to us vs. Brazil.
This was a particularly good year watching U.S. athletes - they were very dominant.
However, the human interest obviously had an agenda they couldn’t even leave out of watching sports - pushing the gay agenda for one focusing on an athlete from another country that didn’t even have a particularly stellar record...it made no sense then when they got to the part of the story pushing his gay relationship then it was clear what the ultimate point of the story was...they just can’t resist...even during coverage which should be focused on sports.
I’ll have to say, that Mario bit used by the Prime Minister of Japan was cool.
