Steven Hill, who originated imposing lead roles on two notable television series, “Mission: Impossible” in the 1960s and “Law & Order” in the 1990s, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 94.

His daughter Sarah Gobioff confirmed his death. He lived in Monsey, N.Y., a hamlet in Rockland County.

Mr. Hill was 44 and a veteran stage and television actor in 1966 when he was cast as Daniel Briggs, the leader of an elite covert-operations unit, in the new series “Mission: Impossible.” But he left after the first season, paving the way for Peter Graves’s six-season run as the show’s lead.

He was actually shown the door at Mission:Impossible because he refused to work the Sabbath and it was messing with the shooting schedule.

When he wandered down the hall at Desilu and tried to convince his fellow Jews, Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, that they too should not work the Sabbath, it was too much for the studio.

He was a damned crank in L&O.
Which I thought was perfect - especially as I get older and crankier.

Dear mears,

re:
“He was a damned crank in L&O.”

He was the embodiment of my mentor, when I was employed by the DoD, at Grumman Aerospace Bethpage!

If you were to watch closely, there was a sort of ‘father-son’ interaction between Adam (Hill), and Stone (Moriarty).

True, and those old episodes were terrific except for Richard Brooks, the worst actor in television history.

It was always a battle between Kay Lenz and Lesley Ann Warren for my fantasy girl at the end of a bar at 2:00 AM.
