Steven Hill, who originated imposing lead roles on two notable television series, “Mission: Impossible” in the 1960s and “Law & Order” in the 1990s, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 94.

His daughter Sarah Gobioff confirmed his death. He lived in Monsey, N.Y., a hamlet in Rockland County.

Mr. Hill was 44 and a veteran stage and television actor in 1966 when he was cast as Daniel Briggs, the leader of an elite covert-operations unit, in the new series “Mission: Impossible.” But he left after the first season, paving the way for Peter Graves’s six-season run as the show’s lead.

Through Netflix I was able to watch the first few episodes of Mission Impossible.

I was a big fan as a kid, but never realized that Peter Graves wasn't the first head of the IMF.

They way they used to start Mission Impossible was Steven Hill looking through what seemed to be a pile of magazines, but the front covers were actually pictures of agents he might or might not use for the upcoming mission.

A cool way to start a show. He will be missed.

I loved Adam Schiff. “Cut a deal!” May he rest in peace.

Wow! Had no idea he was still alive. Thought he had left L&O because of his death.
RIP...

He was good in the lead role on M.I.
However, he was an Orthodox Jew and clashed with producers over his refusal to work on Saturdays. Thus, he was fired and Peter Graves brought in.

I much preferred Steven Hill to Peter Graves.

The producer of the show, Bruce Geller was also Jewish I believe.

The producer of the show, Bruce Geller was also Jewish I believe.

As were Hill's co-stars, Barbara Bain and Martin Landau. And right down the hall they were shooting Star Trek with Jewish stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Reportedly it was Hill's attempts to recruit the other Jews working at Desilu into joining his observance of the Sabbath that pushed the studio to can him.
