Generically known as ‘loose meat’ sandwiches, the Maid-Rite brand and recipe has been around Iowa and surrounding area since 1926.

I thought that was a Sloppy Joe. I think ‘loose meat’ sounds like a bathroom problem.

Traditional Sloppy Joe has tomato sauce/ketchup in the recipe. A Maid-Rite does not; the original recipe is just onion, a little dry mustard and Worcestershire. A lot of home recipes use some added chicken broth because the the beef gets over-cooked.
